Sehma: Hiking, Crafts and Church Art
Accommodation in Sehma
Sehma combines a landscape framed by three table mountains with hiking routes, Ore Mountain crafts, and churches with distinctive architectural features. When planning your trip, you can focus on specific hiking destinations and cultural themes.
Landscape and Surroundings
Sehma lies at an elevation of about 600 m above sea level between three table mountains: Bärenstein (898 m) to the east, Scheibenberg (807 m) to the west, and Pöhlberg (832 m) to the north. The mountains and their directions provide a clear frame for the landscape around the town.
The Cranzahl drinking water reservoir is near Sehma. A circular trail runs around the reservoir; access to the shore, swimming, and boating are not permitted there. If you plan this outing, be sure to take the restrictions on access to the shore and water into account.
Hiking from Sehma
From Sehma, you can hike south along the Firstenweg to Fichtelberg near Oberwiesenthal, or north to Frohnauer Hammer. The two destinations lie in opposite directions and give you a clear basis for choosing your route.
From Sehma to the Firstenweg, the hike follows part of the continuously signposted Stoneman Miriquidi mountain bike route. Check the signs and trail conditions locally.
Sehmaer Höhe, between Walthersdorf and Sehma, is a starting point for hikes, walks, and cycling tours. Cycling and hiking trails lead to tourist destinations in the region. These options add another starting point for tours to the destinations mentioned along the Firstenweg.
To hike from Sehma to the forester’s lodge in Buchholz Forest, you can take the Erzgebirgsbahn to Sehma station. Check the timetable before setting out, as schedules may change.
Trail Network in the Sehmatal
Beyond Sehma, the larger municipality of Sehmatal offers a well-developed, signposted network for hiking, cycling, and ski touring. Trails connect the municipality with Oberwiesenthal and Annaberg. The Kammweg quality hiking trail continues from the Eastern Ore Mountains into the Vogtland; circular routes lead through meadows and forests around the local districts. When planning, you can therefore distinguish between the specific hiking destinations from Sehma and the options throughout Sehmatal.
Crafts and Church Art
Ore Mountain craft traditions such as bobbin lace-making and carving are still practiced in Sehma’s associations and passed on to younger generations. This adds a connection to crafts preserved by the community to the outdoor activities.
The Pauluskirche was built in 1898/99. Its interior is typical of an Art Nouveau church; it also contains rare Art Nouveau paintings. The Christuskirche was built and consecrated on February 12, 1922. It is a functional building with some Art Nouveau influences. The comparison shows two distinct expressions: the typical Art Nouveau design inside the Pauluskirche and individual Art Nouveau elements on the Christuskirche.
