Tannenberg: Hiking, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Tannenberg
Tannenberg combines specific hiking trails and natural attractions with historic buildings and Erzgebirge cultural motifs. If you are looking for a destination that offers both outdoor activity and local history, you can choose between trail sections, natural features and individual sights in Tannenberg.
Hiking and Nature in the Lohenbach Valley
Tannenberg is connected to the B 95 via the S 260. The village also lies on the Eisenach–Budapest European long-distance hiking trail and the Silberstraße holiday route. Behind the Tannenberg natural swimming pool, a developed hiking trail leads into the Lohenbach Valley. There you will find a water-treading pool and a shelter with a table and benches. Signposts point towards the Buttersteig trail and the Kleiner Fuchsstein viewpoint.
The Tannenberg section of the Zschopau Valley Trail is eight kilometres long and runs from Tannenberg to Thermalbad Wiesenbad. In the Lohenbach Valley, a nature reserve encompasses nutrient-poor meadows where wild orchids and arnica grow. Along the described trails, both specific landmarks and distinctive plant life are therefore highlights.
The southern side of Tannenberg also has a distinctive landscape: the field-strip pattern typical of a Waldhufendorf farming village is still visible there. Hedges and field boundaries connect the settlement to the surrounding landscape. If you are interested in how the village and its surroundings are laid out, you can pair this view of the field pattern with the natural features of the Lohenbach Valley.
Buildings and Erzgebirge Culture
St. Christopher's Church houses several historic works. The carved altar from 1521 is attributed to the school of Christoph Walther. Other features include a 16th-century sandstone baptismal font, historic children's gravestones and a sandstone epitaph from 1592. The different dates give each piece of the church's furnishings its own historical context.
The Hutzenhäusel is considered a former miners' dwelling, built in the styles of the 16th and 17th centuries, and is a listed building. Following its reconstruction, it retains distinctive architectural features. The house has a common room for around 30 people, a rebuilt wooden staircase and a working kitchen stove in the Erzgebirge style. The outdoor area provides space to relax and barbecue. If you are relying on specific features for your plans, it is advisable to check their current status in advance.
The Paßklausenturm was part of an old moated castle complex that may date back to the 12th century. It is considered one of the best-preserved monuments of its kind in the Erzgebirge. On its Tannenberg section, the Zschopau Valley Trail features the tower as a sight associated with a medieval moated castle. The village pyramid offers a different cultural highlight: designed as a miners' hut, it depicts an Erzgebirge-style living room, a miner, a hunter and a forester.
