Get to know Wilthen through several specific themes: the history of its distillery, legends about Pumphut and hiking trails in the Upper Lusatian Highlands. When planning your trip, consider whether you are more interested in cultural experiences or would like to set aside time for walks through the countryside.

Distillery and regional events

The Wilthen distillery was founded in 1842 by Christian Traugott Hünlich. It is considered one of Germany’s oldest and most important distilleries. Guided tours go through all areas of production, offering an insight into the distillery’s operations. Check the tour arrangements before your trip if you would like to plan a tour.

The Wilthen Tourist Information Centre can also be a point of contact when planning regional events: tickets for regional events are sold there. If you would like to attend a particular event, check in advance whether the tickets you want are available.

Pumphut legends and hiking trails

The Upper Lusatian Highlands, with its network of well-maintained hiking trails, lies in the area surrounding Wilthen. Pumphut is a particular theme in the town: Wilthen has wooden Pumphut monuments and its own Pumphut hiking trail. This local figure from legend can therefore be discovered both in the townscape and along a trail.

The Pumphut Trail is divided into eight sections and has eight stamping stations. Large wooden panels present the Pumphut legends. The trail is considered an adventure hike for the whole family. Those interested in legends will find a different focus here than on a hike centred mainly on the landscape and the route.

The Wilthen Circular Hiking Trail runs over the hills around Wilthen and is marked with a red circle on a white background. Its route includes wooded hills; the trail also provides access to shelters and mountain inns along the way. Individual facilities may change. Before setting out, check which ones are relevant to your plans.

The two trails therefore differ mainly in the experiences described: the Pumphut Trail focuses on legends, wooden panels and stamping stations, while the Wilthen Circular Hiking Trail crosses hills and wooded slopes. No specific trail length or walking time is given here for these routes, so do not choose based solely on the number of sections or the trail markings; instead, base your plans on the specific information for each trail.

Routes in the Upper Lusatian Hundred

The Upper Lusatian Hundred offers routes ranging from 10–15 kilometres to around 100 kilometres. The distances on offer may vary from one edition to the next. Traditionally, the longest route is completed in two stages; the event format may also change. The different route lengths give you a specific reference point for assessing the planned scope of the event.

The event includes checkpoints and, depending on the route length, one to five refreshment stations. Participants receive route directions with a map excerpt. These support services and materials may vary from one edition to the next. For a specific event, check the information for that edition rather than assuming the routes or services will remain unchanged.
