Discover Lichtenberg: Landscape, Church and Puppet World
Accommodation in Lichtenberg
Lichtenberg offers a range of ways to shape your stay: a valley landscape with meadows and woodland, marked hiking trails, the village church as a landmark, and the Lichtenberg Puppet World, with miniatures of homes from earlier times. You can organise your time around your interests, choosing between nature, architecture and glimpses of past ways of life.
Landscape and Views
Lichtenberg lies in a valley surrounded by extensive meadows and woodland. Parts of the municipal area are included in the designated “Fließgewässersystem Kleine Röder und Orla” FFH site. Eichberg is the municipality’s highest point, at an elevation of 353 metres. When visibility is good, views from there extend towards Dresden, the Lusatian Highlands, Saxon Switzerland, the Eastern Ore Mountains and as far as the Czech Republic. Visibility of these destinations depends on the weather.
Hiking the Lichtenberg Trail
The Lichtenberg Trail is a marked hiking route. It starts at the hikers’ car park in the town centre and runs through the municipal area. From 353-metre-high Eichberg, the route offers views towards the Dresden Elbe Valley and, in clear weather, as far as the Ore Mountains. This makes Eichberg a distinct high point along a marked route. There are also signposted hiking trails in Lichtenberg. Check the signs and trail conditions locally before setting out.
Getting Around the Town
A small park in the town centre offers a place to relax. Lichtenberg lies directly off the A4 and S177, which is helpful for finding your way by road.
Village Church and Architectural History
The village church is Lichtenberg’s landmark: a building erected in 1840 in the Byzantine style, with an octagonal tower 45 metres high. It was designed by Dresden architect Ernst Hermann Arndt. Inside, two-tier galleries sit beneath a shallow dome; the pulpit altar is at the eastern end. The different dates help distinguish the building from its fittings: the baptismal font dates from around 1900; the organ case dates from 1844, while the Eule company of Bautzen built the instrument in 1907/08.
First Mention and Homes of the Past
Lichtenberg was first mentioned in a document in 1350. This date refers to the town’s first mention and should be distinguished from 1840, the year the village church was built. The Lichtenberg Puppet World displays miniature kitchens, bedrooms and living rooms that reflect earlier domestic conditions and ways of life. Check the Puppet World’s visitor arrangements before your visit.
