Visitors interested in geological formations, rural architecture and museums will find a variety of destinations in Käbschütztal. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus more on nature and trails or on churches, collections and regional history.

Geology and Landscape

Parts of Käbschütztal lie within the “Valleys southeast of Lommatzsch” FFH area. This area also includes the “Ketzer and Käbschützbach Valleys” subarea. These names give the landscape a specific context: alongside the valleys, geological outcrops in Leutewitz and near Käbschütz station are attractions in their own right.

North of the Leutewitz village pond, a former quarry exposes around 20 metres of rhyolite. Large columns with different inclinations can also be seen in the Leutewitz quarry. A smaller outcrop near Käbschütz station shows horizontal layering alongside a porphyritic volcanic structure. The features are visibly distinct: here, the columns and their varying orientations stand out; there, the layering and rock structure.

Hiking and Getting There

The geological hike in Leutewitz is rated easy and is two kilometres long—the distance given is one way. This gives you a sense of the route’s length without assuming a walking time. By car, take the B 101 from exit 37 Nossen-Ost on the A14 to Krögis, then continue on the K 8031 to Leutewitz Pond.

The geological hike is also accessible by public transport: take the S1 from Dresden Central Station to Meißen, then bus 417 to Leutewitz Gutshof. Check the current timetable before setting off so you can plan your journey accordingly.

Circular Trails and Cycling Route

The Käbschütztal circular trail offers views across the Lommatzscher Pflege hill country and passes the park and pond at Sornitz Castle. A stop at Mauna Vineyard is also planned; you can take a break there at a traditional wine tavern. Check whether it will be open when you visit. The circular trail is described as being about 15.3 kilometres long; a length of 17.7 kilometres is also given.

Another option for a tour is the former narrow-gauge railway line between Meißen-Triebischtal and Lommatzsch. It has been converted into a cycling and hiking trail. This gives you different ways to explore the area: the circular trail, with views across the hill country, and the former railway line, now put to a new use.

Rural Culture and Museums

Käbschütztal’s rural heritage is reflected in manor houses and preserved four-sided and three-sided farmsteads. If you are interested in the area’s architectural character, you can view these farmstead and manor-house forms alongside the Evangelical Lutheran churches in Krögis and Planitz. Other attractions include the Löthain Narrow-Gauge Railway Museum, the Generations Park in Niederjahna and the “Glückauf-Schacht” Mining Museum in Mehren.

The Rittergut Barnitz Museum displays historical furnishings and a small polytechnic cabinet. These collections offer different perspectives on history and everyday life, complementing the churches, farmsteads and museums. Clay and kaolin mining contributed to the development of ceramic industries; kaolin from Seilitz was used to make porcelain. This regional production history links raw-material extraction with the manufacture of ceramic products.
