Gersdorf: Church, Hessen Mill and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Gersdorf
Gersdorf lies at the foot of the Ore Mountains and developed as a typical forest-strip village in the Hegebach valley. The main considerations when choosing a place to stay are its architectural and art history, hiking routes connected with mining, and the GlĂĽckauf Brewery. There is also an outdoor swimming pool with several facilities, which has remained closed since a landslide in 2022 and will stay closed until it is reconstructed. If you are looking for a hotel, these different themes can help you decide whether Gersdorf fits your travel plans.
Church, Mill and Art
St. Mary's Church was built in Gersdorf between 1862 and 1865 and houses a valuable Jehmlich organ. Hessen Mill takes visitors back to an earlier period: the complex is thought to have originated around 1450 as a sheep farm and watermill. The Tetzner Museum is housed in the former mill wing. It is dedicated to the life and work of Heinz Tetzner, a painter and graphic artist from Gersdorf and an Expressionist artist, and presents an overview of his work in oil paintings, watercolors and graphic art. The church and mill complex offer different historical points of reference: the construction dates of St. Mary's Church are specifically given as 1862 to 1865, while the origins of Hessen Mill are dated only approximately and presented as an assumption. The museum, meanwhile, focuses on Tetzner's artistic work and the three media on display.
Hiking with a Mining Connection
The 18-kilometer Steinkohlenweg is a marked regional circular hiking trail that passes through Oelsnitz/Erzgebirge, Hohndorf, Gersdorf and Lugau. The length refers to the entire loop, which covers several towns. The Gersdorf Mining Education Trail has a different, specifically stated highlight: a viewpoint with far-reaching views towards Oelsnitz. The comparison therefore centers on different features—the total length of the Steinkohlenweg and the view from the educational trail. In the wider Zwickau district travel destination, there is also an extensive, well-developed network of marked hiking trails with many rest areas and places to stop for refreshments; around 700 kilometers can be explored on foot.
Brewery and Outdoor Pool
The GlĂĽckauf Brewery's BraustĂĽbchen is located in the converted old brewhouse. The original interior has been preserved, and there is seating inside the old brewing kettle. The shop sells the brewery's full range, as well as beer-related gifts, bock beer truffles and beer brand chocolates. Since shop availability may change, please check before visiting. The outdoor swimming pool has a 50-meter competition pool, a diving tower, a water slide, a beach volleyball court and a separate children's pool. It has remained closed since a landslide in 2022 and will stay closed until it is reconstructed.
Plan Your Journey

The A4 and A72 motorways can be reached via the B180; the distance is given as about seven kilometers. Road conditions and access regulations can also change, so it is advisable to check the latest road information before traveling.
