Meerane combines historic underground cellars, a distinctive steep road, hiking trails and attractions relating to the town’s history. This gives you a range of interests to consider when choosing a destination: underground tours, scenery, architecture or art. These themes also give an impression of what makes Meerane special, without all the experiences being of the same kind.

Historic Underground Cellars and the Steep Wall

The historic underground cellars take visitors on a guided tour through a network of historic underground passageways beneath Burgberg. The section open to the public is 350 metres long and reaches a depth of up to eight metres; the tour lasts about 60 minutes. Visits are only possible with a guide. So if you plan to include this stop, allow about an hour for the tour.

The Steep Wall adds a very different Meerane attraction: the road is 248 metres long and has an average gradient of 13 percent. It is known for international cycling races and also serves as a stage finish for vintage car events. The historic underground cellars offer a guided look at the town’s history, while the Steep Wall is associated with cycling races and vintage cars.

Hiking Trails and Nature in the Rolling Countryside

Fields, meadows and forests define Meerane’s hilly landscape, offering walkers and cyclists appealing scenery. There are around 25 kilometres of hiking trails across three signposted circular routes of varying lengths. This lets you choose between different routes rather than being limited to one distance.

Circular Route 1 is 9.2 kilometres long. It connects Meerane, Ponitz and Waldsachsen; the return route follows the B 93 to Wilhelm-Wunderlich-Park. As route descriptions may be updated, check the local signposting before setting off. The specific route and the approximate total length of the network are therefore separate points of reference: the roughly 25 kilometres are spread across three circular routes, while 9.2 kilometres is the length of Circular Route 1.

Another nature attraction is the Gornzigtal nature trail. It runs through a natural valley with beech forest that is 100 to 150 years old, rare plants and native animals. A total of 82 bird species have been recorded in the area. This makes the trail particularly appealing to travellers interested not only in the landscape but also in forests and biodiversity.

Town History, Museums and Art

St. Martin’s Church stands on Burgberg and was first mentioned in 1314. The Italian Staircase leads directly from Teichplatz to the church. Another historical reference dates back further: Meerane Museum displays a silver denarius from the 12th century, linked to the town’s first mention in 1174. The church was first mentioned in 1314; Meerane was first mentioned in 1174.

The local history museum in the Old Town Hall focuses on the town’s history and Meerane’s textile tradition. The museum also includes an original, preserved prison cell in the Fronfeste annex. The ART IN gallery is housed in the art house. The sculpture park showcases public art on the site of a former industrial wasteland. Teichplatz and Getting There

Teichplatz is used for concerts, markets and festivals; the events programme varies. So if a particular event is important to your trip, check the relevant dates. Meerane is connected to regional and long-distance traffic via the B 93 and A 4. Before travelling, check road conditions and diversions separately.
