Falkenau combines local festival traditions with industrial and mining history, as well as trails along the Flöha. When looking for a hotel, it helps to start by asking whether you are coming for a specific event date or are interested in the town’s historical and natural attractions. The individual highlights are easy to distinguish: festivals take place on specific days of the year, while the spinning mill, mining and hiking routes each offer their own points of interest.

Festivals Throughout the Year

The traditional Falkenau Advent Festival takes place every year on the first Sunday of Advent behind the Volkshaus. The more than 30-year-old Falkenau Christmas pyramid is set in motion during the event. Another recurring occasion is Walpurgis Night on April 30, followed by dancing into May on the festival grounds behind the Volkshaus. A maypole is erected in front of the Volkshaus on May Day. Walpurgis Night and the maypole are two consecutive but distinct customs. If you are planning your stay around one of the festivals, check the specific event information: the traditions return every year, but dates and programs may vary.

Spinning Mill and Mining History

The Schreyersche Spinnmühle / Baumwollspinnerei Georg Liebermann, Untere Spinnerei is located at Dorfstraße 15. It is significant for its architectural, local, industrial and biographical history. These four perspectives lead from the building itself to Falkenau’s local history and on to its industrial and biographical history; the site is therefore a special point of interest for visitors interested in the town’s development and spinning mill history.

Mining has also shaped local history. In the wider local mining area of Falkenau, early modern silver mining developed along the Zechenbach stream; a total of 29 shafts have been documented in this area. The Zechengrund educational trail leads to the entrance of the Xaveriusstollen. Mining hikes also take place every year along the mining hiking trail and the mining educational trail in Zechengrund. The specific destination at the adit and the recurring hikes along the named routes thus offer different ways to explore the theme of mining.

Nature and Trails

Falkenau Nature Education Park features a barefoot trail with a field of prickly cones. At the opening, visitors were able to explore a park with twelve stations. Falkenau outdoor pool is a well-maintained old natural swimming pool in a scenic setting, offering opportunities for swimming and relaxation.

The site of today’s outdoor pool is also part of the town’s history: an ore processing and washing plant was once planned there, but the Thirty Years’ War brought the project to an end. The history of the site thus goes beyond its current use as a natural swimming pool, reaching back to a project that was never realized.

For hikers, the circular route “From Flöha to the Hetzdorf Viaduct” connects several places and landscape features: it runs along the Flöha and through Falkenau to the viaduct. The route follows a footpath and cycle path to Falkenau, then crosses the Flöha floodplain, which is still relatively wide here. By comparison, the Zechengrund educational trail focuses on mining and the entrance to the Xaveriusstollen.

When looking for a hotel in Falkenau, your reason for traveling is a good place to start: a festival visit depends on the event calendar, while a hiking-focused stay offers different highlights, including mining history in Zechengrund and the Flöha floodplain route to the Hetzdorf Viaduct.
