Wechselburg between culture and outdoor activities

A stay in Wechselburg offers several different highlights: the basilica, the Baroque palace park and a longer themed hike. Plan your day according to whether you would like to visit a church, spend time on winding paths or take a circular route. These activities are quite distinct: after sightseeing and time in the park, the Forest Adventure Trail offers a hike with a set route and a focus on nature.

The basilica can be visited outside prayer times. Group tours can be arranged by prior agreement from Monday to Saturday. If you are planning such a tour, check the local visiting arrangements before travelling, as visitor regulations may change.

The palace park offers a different focus. This Baroque landscape garden features trees that are up to 180 years old, a Lourdes grotto that is a pilgrimage site, and other historic elements. Winding paths and seating areas characterise the grounds. The park foregrounds its garden landscape and historic features, while the Forest Adventure Trail offers a longer circular hike.

Circular route and historic buildings

The Forest Adventure Trail is a family-friendly circular route of approximately 9.5 kilometres. It starts and ends at the Mulden car park in Wechselburg and leads over Rochlitzer Berg. Ten information stations cover the local forest, as well as its flora and fauna. The route thus combines a clearly defined distance with themes relating to local nature. Its length helps you gauge the scale of the hike; check the trail conditions before setting out.

The Wechselburg Mulde Bridge is a distinct historical landmark: it was built from Rochlitz porphyry between 1844 and 1846. Its construction period and material provide two specific points of reference. Together with the basilica and the historic features in the palace park, the bridge adds another building with a clearly stated date of origin to Wechselburg’s cultural heritage.

The wider destination of Central Saxony

In the wider destination of Central Saxony, the 353-metre-high Rochlitzer Berg is a remnant of volcanic activity. It contains red porphyry tuff, considered unique in Germany and Europe. Since the Wechselburg Forest Adventure Trail passes over Rochlitzer Berg, the circular route also connects with this geological landscape.

Other regional themes also broaden the perspective on Central Saxony: Porphyrland Geopark invites visitors to hike and cycle, and the Mulde Cycle Route crosses the district of Central Saxony. The range therefore extends from hiking trails and landscape themes to a regional cycle route.

The wider destination of Central Saxony also has its own cultural highlights. Rochsburg Castle has housed a museum since 1911. Its “People Make Clothes” exhibition presents 52 costumes from 1,000 years of European fashion history. Rochlitz Castle offers guided experiences exploring the history of the castle and its residents over several centuries. These examples broaden the picture to include museum and castle history, while the basilica, palace park, circular route and Mulde Bridge shape the choice of attractions in Wechselburg.
