Mockrehna combines a rural cycling route with mill culture, village history and small museums. When planning your stay, it is worth getting to know the municipality’s different highlights: a 21-kilometre circular route starts at the railway station, while the mill, local history museum and collections offer their own insights into local history. This lets you tailor your time to your interests – out cycling or exploring historical and cultural topics.

Cycling around Mockrehna

The 21-kilometre cycling loop begins and ends at Mockrehna railway station and connects six stops along the route. It passes through fields, meadows, forests and small villages. The loop provides a practical framework for planning your cycling stage. Separate cycle paths are not available everywhere. Take this into account when planning and check the road conditions before setting out.

Audenhain: Waterways and mill history

Audenhain, in the municipality of Mockrehna, is shaped by the Schwarzer Graben. There are 88 bridges along the approximately two-metre-wide waterway, which is why Audenhain is nicknamed “Saxony’s Little Venice”. The waterway and bridges give the village a distinctive character and form a charming contrast with the rural surroundings.

The Paltrock windmill in Audenhain dates from 1751 and is still fully operational. It includes a milling room and changing exhibitions. Visits are possible on German Mill Day or by prior arrangement. If you are planning to visit the mill, check visiting arrangements in advance.

The Audenhain local history museum is also housed in a former school building. It displays objects from rural households as well as records from the former school and the municipality. Its focus is therefore on everyday life and local history. Together with the mill, the museum offers two different perspectives on Audenhain: traditional crafts and life in the community.

Forest, wildlife and local collections

The four-kilometre forest nature trail in Gräfendorf covers forest conversion, pine heath, burial mounds and forest soil ecology at its various stops. The topics combine natural history with local history and are designed to be explored outdoors. The trail therefore offers a different focus from the cycling loop: rather than villages and fields, it centres on the forest and its development.

The municipality is also home to a private 110-hectare wildlife park. It is home to red deer, fallow deer, wild boar, reindeer, llamas, sheep and goats. A farm shop sells game sausage and venison from organic production. The animals and products on offer may change; if either is important to your visit, check the current situation in advance.

A small museum in the attic of the manor house in Wildenhain displays household, craft, agricultural and school items. In Mockrehna, the stone and axe from the local church legend can still be seen in the church tower. Both places complement the larger museum themes with specific collections and traditions from the municipality. Check visiting arrangements in advance if you are planning to visit the museums.
