Naundorf: Church, cycle path and Döllnitz Railway
Accommodation in Naundorf
When looking for a hotel in Naundorf, you can first decide what to focus on during your trip: St. Catherine’s Church is the main cultural attraction, while the Döllnitz Railway stop is between Oschatz and Mügeln. The Jahnatal Cycle Route runs from Baderitz near Zschaitz via Hof to Riesa, making it a distinct cycling focus.
St. Catherine’s Church: history and features
St. Catherine’s Church was completely remodelled in the Baroque style between 1742 and 1744. At the same time, its preserved perimeter walls reveal a typical Gothic floor plan with a long nave and a hexagonal east end. Inside, the pulpit altar forms the visual focal point. A stained-glass window in the south-eastern altar area dates from the 1896 renovation and depicts the risen Christ; the pneumatic Jehmlich organ dates from 1907. The building thus brings together different periods: the Baroque remodelling and later furnishings from around the turn of the 20th century. Church records also note that, following Naundorf’s 1993 anniversary celebrations, the church was renovated inside and out in accordance with heritage conservation principles.
On the north side are former manor chapels associated with the estates of Naundorf, Leuben and Casabra. They are partly used as archive rooms and retain valuable Baroque stoves. St. Catherine’s Church also hosts concerts and lectures. If an event is important to your travel plans, check the dates in advance.
Jahnatal Cycle Route and Hof Palace Complex
The 27-kilometre Jahnatal Cycle Route runs from Baderitz near Zschaitz via Hof to Riesa, following the Jahna through a floodplain landscape. It is considered a route with no significant climbs and particularly suitable for families with children; most of it runs along dedicated cycle and footpaths. White and green signs bearing the words “Jahnatalradweg” mark the route.
The Hof Palace and Park Complex lies directly on the Jahnatal Cycle Route. It comprises a Renaissance palace, a Baroque palace and a park. The Hof local history association runs a local history room in an outbuilding of the palace complex. Unlike at St. Catherine’s Church, the attractions in Hof are spread across an ensemble of palace buildings, a park and the local history room.
The Döllnitz Railway and the wider region
Naundorf has a stop on the Döllnitz Railway between Oschatz and Mügeln. The railway line runs for 20 kilometres from Oschatz via Mügeln to Glossen and Kemmlitz. If you are planning a journey, check the timetable and service status in advance.
The wider travel destination of North Saxony extends beyond the individual towns. The district includes Dübener Heide Nature Park, Dahlener Heide, Wermsdorf Forest and the floodplain landscapes along the Elbe and Mulde. Cycling, hiking and sailing are among the options for active leisure. Water skiing is also available on North Saxony’s lake landscape, formed from former open-cast mines.
