A trip to Rackwitz offers a range of themes to explore, from protected landscapes and water activities to culture and regional cuisine. For planning purposes, you can consider these interests separately and then decide which destinations you want to shape your stay.

Nature Reserves and Lakes

The former open-cast mining area from which Lake Werbeliner See emerged covers 1,506 hectares. The lake has been designated a European bird sanctuary since 2006 and a nature reserve since May 2019. A visit therefore centers on a large-scale landscape and two protected designations. Check the current visitor regulations before entering, as they may change.

Activities at Lake Schladitzer See include swimming, sailing, surfing and freediving. A nine-kilometre paved circuit is suitable for cycling, inline skating and roller skiing. There is also a paved circular path around the lake that is suitable for wheelchair users. The loop around Schladitzer Bucht is about 8.5 kilometres long and runs directly along the lake. It is approximately 2.5 kilometres on foot from Rackwitz station to Schladitzer Bucht.

For more water-based activities, Lake Schladitzer See has a water fun park with an inflatable obstacle and climbing course. Its seasonal opening schedule may vary, so check the conditions for your planned visit. You can rent bicycles at Lake Schladitzer See from the ALL-on-SEA Camp & Sport Resort. There is an e-bike charging station next to Restaurant LEVANTE at Schladitzer Bucht. If you plan to rent bikes or use the charging station, check availability in advance.

Accommodation and Cuisine in Podelwitz

The Landgasthof Podelwitz offers bookable guest accommodation with 15 beds; bookings are subject to availability.

The cuisine also has its own distinctive character: it ranges from hearty dishes to light Mediterranean fare and includes homemade pasta specialities. The Landgasthof also serves meat from lambs, chickens, geese and ducks raised on its own farm. Menus may change, so check the current selection if you have a particular dish in mind.

Churches, a Castle and Culture

The village church in Zschortau houses a Baroque organ that Johann Sebastian Bach personally inspected. His verdict on the instrument was “tüchtig, fleißig und wohl erbauet” (“capable, diligent and well constructed”). The village church in Podelwitz has a Johann Gottlob Mende organ; the historic church buildings in Podelwitz are also worth a visit. Zschortau Castle and Rackwitz Town Hall are also among the sights to see.

Bunte BĂĽhne Biesen hosts a variety of cultural events. If you would like to make an event the occasion for your trip, check the dates in advance. Together with the churches and the castle, it offers a cultural focus different from the lakes and circular trails: you can plan your trip around architecture and organ history or an event, rather than trying to fit every theme into the same stay.
