Dorfhain: Mining History and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Dorfhain
Dorfhain brings together several different themes for planning your day: mining history at the Aurora Erbstolln, a village church with a long history of construction, hiking trails, and a municipal leisure pool. Depending on your interests, you can choose between local history, a hike, and swimming.
Mining History and the Aurora Erbstolln
The first documented evidence of mining in Dorfhain dates back to 1511. The historic mining era ended with the closure of two mines: Neujahrswechsel closed in 1892, and Silbersegen in 1896. These two dates mark the end of this era in Dorfhain.
The Aurora Erbstolln was driven through gneiss and porphyry (microgranite). On the section of the Silver Route between Freiberg and Dresden, it is the only silver mine open to visitors. Original mining tools dating from 1580 to the present are on display in the Erbstolln. This offers insight into mining both through its geological foundations and through the tools used.
During guided visits underground, visitors wear protective coats, helmets, and lamps. Children aged six and over can take part. Check seasonal opening information before travelling. A GEOPARK tour also covers 100 years in the history of a company that later moved to Dorfhain. Tour booking information may change, so check it in advance.
The Village Church and Its History
The Baroque Protestant village church stands at the upper edge of the village. Its history of construction dates back to an early church around 1300, followed later by a Late Gothic reconstruction. After a fire in 1632, the church was rebuilt, and a vestibule was added in 1724. The different construction phases give the village church a distinctive cultural and historical focus alongside the mining history.
Hiking Trails with Different Highlights
A circular hike leads from Dorfhain through the valley of the Wilde Weißeritz and takes in former mills in the Weißeritz Valley. The mills are historic stops; individual sites may have their own access requirements. The Ritter Theler Trail passes the Aurora Erbstolln and then continues to Dorfhain. The two route descriptions therefore differ mainly in character: a circular hike through the valley or a trail passing the mining attraction and continuing on to Dorfhain.
The Ritter Theler Trail uses white-green-white and white-red-white markings and is also signposted as a mining trail and an ENSO trail. As markings can change when signs are updated, check the trail markers before setting out. No distance or duration is given here for these trails, so plan according to the latest route information.
Leisure Pool and Getting There
The municipal leisure pool offers a different focus from the cultural and hiking attractions. Facilities include an adventure pool with a 65-metre slide and a wild-water channel, a sports pool, children’s pools, play areas, and a sunbathing lawn. This makes the water and play areas a distinct activity alongside the historic attractions and hiking trails.
You can reach the Aurora Erbstolln by public transport on bus route 343. It runs via Tharandt, Edle Krone, Dorfhain, and Klingenberg; the relevant stop is called Dorfhain Abzweig Hosenmühle. Check the connection before travelling, as transport information may change. This lets you include travel to the Erbstolln in your plans without assuming a particular journey time or fixed timetable.
