When planning, it helps to choose your focus first: city history, an interactive museum, insights into medieval life, or walking trails. The attractions have different emphases and give you a concrete starting point for your plans.

City History Between Church and Art

Today’s St. Aegidien Church was built in 17 months and consecrated on October 29, 1741. The date and short construction period provide a specific historical reference point. The sculpture trail offers another way to explore the city’s history: this art trail leads through the old town. Its 20 works commemorate historical events and important figures in the city. The church focuses on its construction history and consecration, while the trail offers an artistic commemoration of events and people.

Experience Inventions and Industrial History

ZeitWerkStadt is an interactive museum about important inventions and achievements from Saxony. Its digital journey through time explores Frankenberg’s history of the automotive industry, printing, carpet weaving, and cigar making. The Time Cube features a walk-in 360-degree projection. The museum is designed as an interactive experience for families. It therefore combines an overview of Saxon inventions with insights into several local industries and an immersive projection. Those particularly interested in the history of technology and the economy will find a different focus here than in the historical themes of the sculpture trail.

Medieval Life in Bergstadt Bleiberg

Bergstadt Bleiberg shows how the residents of a medieval mining settlement lived and worked in the 13th and 14th centuries. Its main attraction is a group of houses built based on archaeological excavations at Treppenhauer. Alongside this insight into everyday life in the settlement, the program includes medieval crafts and food. These include bread baking, mead, herbal tea, and cooking over an open fire. The visit thus combines a portrayal of life in the past with practical topics related to crafts and food.

Forest and River Trails for Time Outdoors

The forest adventure trail is a four-kilometer loop along easy-to-walk forest paths; the walking time is approximately two hours. This gives you a guide for planning your time, but the duration is approximate. Another hiking option is the Harrasfelsen–Mittweida section of the Zschopau Valley Trail, which is part of the city’s trail network. It follows the Zschopau through a medieval mining area. The two descriptions have different emphases: the forest adventure trail is described as a loop, with its length and approximate duration, while the Zschopau Valley Trail section is characterized by its course along the river and the mining landscape.

The Sachsenburg–Hainichen Trail is also partly part of the trail network and is marked in red. This applies to the section as far as the turnoff to Rossauer Wald. To reach the trail, bus route 675 connects Frankenberg/Sa. or Mittweida with Sachsenburg/Gh Reinhardt. Check the current service status of the route before travelling. This lets you plan a hike using the available trail and transport information, without assigning an approximate duration to a route for which no duration is specified.

Getting Around and Getting Here

The tourist information office at Markt 14 provides visitors with information about Frankenberg’s tourist attractions. For long-distance travel, rail connections are available on the Hainichen–Chemnitz route; by car, Frankenberg can be reached via the B180, B169, and A4. This information can help you choose how to travel. If you want to take the bus for the Sachsenburg–Hainichen Trail, check its current service status separately.

The attractions described bring these differences to life, without requiring you to plan the same kind of outing each time.
