Geising: Nature, mining and Baroque history
Accommodation in Geising
If you are looking for a hotel in Geising, the town’s nature and culture can shape the focus of your trip. Here, nature and hiking destinations sit alongside architectural landmarks, mining history and leisure activities. The differences below can help you plan a stay with the right focus—from the Geisingberg area to the natural swimming pool, church and post milepost.
Nature and trails
The Geisingberg Nature Reserve is distinguished by exceptional biological diversity in a small area. The Geisingberg area can be reached from Geising station or HartmannmĂĽhle; a steep climb leads up from the valley. This gradient is a specific point to consider when planning an excursion in the area.
A circular hiking trail around Geising is 10.53 kilometres long. It starts and ends at Geising railway bridge, follows a historic nature trail and passes Löwenhainer Höhe, the Anton Günther monument, Kohlhaukuppe, Aschergraben and the historic Geising bobsleigh run. There are panoramic views along the way. Geising station and Geisingberg are also important stops on the Erzgebirge-Vogtland ridge trail.
For planning purposes, the two routes differ: the circular trail is a loop with named stops; for the Geisingberg area, Geising station and HartmannmĂĽhle are named as access points, and a steep climb leads up from the valley. This presents a described loop and access to an area with exceptional biological diversity as two distinct nature experiences.
Buildings and traces of history
A Baroque post milepost stands at the entrance to Geising. The present-day post is a copy made in 1987 of the original, which was erected in 1734.
Geising Church was rebuilt in 1689 as a simple Baroque hall church with three tiers of galleries. Inside the church is a Gothic winged altarpiece from the predecessor church, dated to around 1530. A Baroque church building and a work of art from the older church thus come together in one place.
The massive basalt columns of the former quarry on Geisingberg clearly reveal its volcanic origins. In the Erdbach valley, the entrance to the Silber-Stollen mine has been preserved as evidence of former mining.
Beside the house at Altenberger StraĂźe 4 stands a stone cross retrieved from a stream. An engraved knife or curved sword suggests that it was erected as atonement for an act of violence.
Leisure at HĂĽttenteich and the wildlife park
The Hüttenteich natural swimming pool has a swimming area and a non-swimming area, as well as a water slide with waves. There are also sunbathing lawns, a children’s playground and sports facilities. Away from the water, there is an 18-hole miniature golf course, as well as electric mini-boats and rowing boats. Swimming, miniature golf and boating thus offer a range of activities at this leisure destination.
The Osterzgebirge Wildlife Park is located on the grounds of HartmannmĂĽhle between Lauenstein and Geising. On a walk there, you can see fallow deer, red deer and mouflon, as well as lynxes and wildcats, in a natural setting. The wildlife park also has a large playground with a climbing castle.
Geising’s Gründelstadion offers ice skating and ice hockey. Together with the natural swimming pool and wildlife park, it complements the nature and culture attractions with further leisure activities.
