Dohma is considered a peaceful, green and idyllic holiday destination, as well as a starting point for hikes in Saxon Switzerland and visits to Dresden. The village lies on a plateau between the Bahre Valley and the Gottleuba Valley. The landscape, hiking trails and historical sites are therefore key considerations when planning a trip.

Hiking to Natural and Historical Sites

The well-maintained hiking trails around Dohma include a route to Cottaer Spitzberg; well-kept paths also lead in its direction. The 390.8-metre-high basalt hill has been protected as a designated natural monument since 1979 because of its geological and botanical features. Its elevation, basalt and protected status give the destination a clear focus on landscape and natural history.

A hiking trail leads from Dohma to the Neu Dohma Tunnel. During the Second World War, paintings from the Dresden Picture Gallery were hidden there. Spitzberg and the tunnel offer different points of interest: one is a protected basalt hill with geological and botanical features, the other is linked to the story of the hidden paintings. Check trail conditions before setting out, as hiking routes may change.

Castle, Park and Historic Sites

A castle was built in Cotta in 1662, next to the church, with a castle park covering more than 7,000 square metres. The castle and park can be visited during a walk through the village; access to the grounds may vary. If you are planning a visit, it is best to check access in advance.

Protzemühle, near Altneundorf in the Gottleuba Valley, was first mentioned in 1575 and is a protected historic monument. The historical reference points differ: the castle has a known construction date, while the mill has a known date of first mention. This lets you place the two sites in context according to their respective histories.

More Destinations in the Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge District

The wider destination of the Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge district offers more nature- and activity-focused options. Saxon Switzerland National Park is the only national park in Saxony and also Germany’s only rocky national park. The Painters’ Way runs through the Elbe Sandstone Mountains in eight stages. It is exclusively a hiking trail and cannot be explored by bicycle or e-bike.

For cycling, the Elbe Cycle Route offers a different focus: a 40-kilometre route runs through Saxon Switzerland. The route follows the Elbe, offers views of table mountains and villages, and has family-friendly stops along the river. This makes hiking and cycling two distinct options for exploring the region.

Cultural sites in the district include Königstein Fortress. Modern exhibitions and interactive stations on the fortress plateau present the fortress’s history; the range of activities also includes guided tours, hands-on activities and cultural events. The Altenberg Mining Museum provides an overview of the 550-year history of tin mining in Altenberg. Mining there began around 1440 and ended in 1991 when operations ceased.
