Sebnitz combines a strong artificial flower tradition with city history and a wide range of active leisure activities. At the German Art Flower, you can learn about the production process and try your hand at making flowers yourself. Municipal collections, a historic walking tour and activities at SoliVital round out the experience.

Artificial Flower Craftsmanship in Sebnitz

Artificial flowers have been made in Sebnitz since 1834; the German Art Flower Sebnitz continues the tradition to this day, using traditional handcraft techniques. Visitors can watch each step of the process and try making flowers themselves. This puts the focus not only on the finished crafts but also on how they are made.

The German Art Flower offers special guided tours for people with mobility or visual impairments. The facilities also include a lift and convenient parking for cars and buses. These practical details can help you plan a visit to see the craft in action.

Museum and City History

The Museum of Artificial Flowers and City History in Sebnitz houses more than 12,000 exhibits, and its museum library has more than 3,000 titles. Its historic interiors include a weaver’s room, the office of an artificial flower manufacturer, a homeworker’s room, and rooms from the Baroque and Biedermeier periods. This gives you a glimpse into different aspects of craftsmanship, work and daily life.

The municipal collections and the Africa House invite you to explore art, culture and regional history at the museum buildings at Hertigswalder Straße 12–14. Spread across three floors, the municipal collections document important periods in the history of the border region and the city. The Historic City Walk starts at the collections, passes through the historic city center and traces Sebnitz’s transformation from a linen-weaving village into an artificial flower town.

A flower trail is planned: it is intended to connect former artificial flower production sites in the city center and explain the history of the buildings and factories. The trail is therefore a planned project, not an existing walking route.

Leisure and Exercise

SoliVital offers an indoor playground, a climbing hall, a soccer arena, a fitness and health area, a bowling alley, a rehearsal room and dining options. The cross-border Borderless Trails mountain bike area lies between Saxony and the Czech Republic, with its starting point at SoliVital in Sebnitz. This means there are varied indoor activities as well as mountain biking for different kinds of active pursuits.

The Sebnitz tourist area offers access to hikes in the wider Elbe Sandstone Mountains, with rock formations, valleys, forests and panoramic views. The landscape complements the city’s cultural attractions with opportunities to enjoy nature and go hiking; the landscape features mentioned are not necessarily all within the city limits.

Hiking Trails in the District of Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge

The wider destination of the district of Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge is home to Saxon Switzerland National Park, Germany’s only national park of sandstone cliffs and Saxony’s only national park. The 116-kilometer Malerweg trail runs through the national park region. It is exclusively a hiking trail and cannot be explored by bicycle or e-bike. Overnight stays along the route are available at hotels, guesthouses or a campground.

The 105-kilometer Forststeig Elbsandstein trail also passes through the Saxon Switzerland conservation area. Overnight options include official bivouac sites and trekking huts. In the national park region, blue trail markers indicate long-distance trails, red markers indicate regional trails, and green or yellow markers indicate local trails. In the core zone, you may only use marked or signposted trails. This distinguishes the regional hiking context from the Borderless Trails mountain biking area in Sebnitz.
