Stadt Wehlen combines an Elbe landscape with striking sandstone formations: steep cliffs, wooded heights and the broad Elbe Valley define the surroundings. The town offers a range of options for planning your trip: walking and cycling routes, experiences on the Elbe, and cultural and nature-related activities. You can decide whether to focus your stay on outdoor activities, the river landscape or sightseeing.

Landscape, Hiking and the Elbe

The Elbe Sandstone Mountains were formed from sandstone deposits that accumulated in a shallow sea and were later reshaped by uplift and erosion. The combination of cliffs, wooded heights and the Elbe Valley gives the landscape its distinctive contrast between steep formations and a broad valley floor.

Hiking around Stadt Wehlen ranges from relaxing walks and family discovery tours to challenging high-level trails. The routes vary in difficulty. Before your trip, check trail conditions and choose a route that suits your plans.

The Elbe Cycle Route runs directly through Stadt Wehlen and offers opportunities for both sporty and leisurely bike rides. There are also different ways to experience the Elbe on the water: cycling along the river, paddling trips and excursions on historic paddle steamers. The availability of activities on the water may vary depending on the season and conditions.

The ferry in Stadt Wehlen connects the two banks of the Elbe in just a few minutes. During the crossing, you can enjoy views of the river, the cliffs and the town skyline. If you plan to take the ferry, check its operating times before your trip.

Castle, Museum and Botanical Garden

Wehlen Castle stands on a rocky promontory beside the town centre, about 25 metres above the Elbe. It can be reached from the market square via steps. The surviving structures include the surrounding walls, a former defensive tower known as the “Drum”, and preserved vaulted cellars. Its location and remains give the castle a distinctive place between the town and the river.

The local history museum is devoted to the town’s past. Its exhibitions cover Elbe shipping, sandstone quarrying, everyday culture and crafts. The botanical garden, laid out in the 1920s, is right next door and extends across terraces above the town. Its planting includes native plants, herbs and medicinal plants, as well as alpine species.

The botanical garden covers 5,400 square metres and contains around 600 plant species. From there, you can look out over Stadt Wehlen and the Elbe Valley. The garden and museum offer different points of interest: the garden focuses on plants and views, while the museum explores local history and its themes.

Sandstone in Miniature

In the village of Wehlen, the “Little Saxon Switzerland” miniature park features detailed sandstone models of regional rock formations and landmarks. The park covers 8,000 square metres. While the cliffs and Wehlen Castle can be seen in their natural setting, the miniature park brings them to life as models. It adds a unique perspective on regional sandstone formations to the town’s nature and cultural attractions.
