This helps you match the place to the experiences that matter for your stay. Amrum offers additional nature and cultural attractions.

North Sea Trail, dunes and nature

The official North Sea Themed Trail starts and ends at the large car park at the entrance to Norddorf. It runs through dunes and along the beach towards Amrumer Odde. Along the way, there are views of the Wadden Sea; seals and grey seals may also be spotted. The number of animals you see varies by season.

On a North Sea walk, the surfaces alternate between asphalt, firm gravel and beach. At the northern tip of Amrum lies the protected Amrumer Odde. Large colonies of seabirds breed in the area; seals and grey seals use it as a resting and pupping site. The protected belt of dunes stretches from Norddorf to Wittdün. The varied landscapes and wildlife offer practical points of reference for walks and nature watching.

Getting there and finding your way

The Norddorf–Minigolfplatz stop is a landmark for arriving by public transport; parking is available at the entrance to the village. Check connections and parking before setting off. The themed trail starts and ends at the large car park at the entrance to the village, so you can also take this starting point into account when planning your walk.

If you would like to combine train and ferry, Niebüll has train connections operated by NEG directly to Dagebüll Mole, where ferries to Föhr and Amrum depart. Check the timetables before your trip so you can plan your journey accordingly.

Nature and culture on Amrum

The Amrum Nature Centre brings together nature conservation, environmental education and living island culture, and serves as a point of contact for interested visitors. Amrum also has cycle paths through meadows and fields, through the forest, and along farm tracks with views of the Wadden Sea. The varied routes offer different landscape experiences for a bike ride.

Guided mudflat walks connect Amrum and Föhr in both directions. The tours depend on the tide, weather and current tour dates; check these dates before making plans. Another perspective on the island is offered by the Amrum Lighthouse, considered the tallest accessible tower on the North Sea coast. From there, the view extends across Amrum, Sylt and Föhr, the Halligen islands of Langeneß and Hooge, Pellworm and the mainland. Visibility depends on the weather.

Cultural attractions on Amrum include the Amrum Windmill, the oldest windmill in Schleswig-Holstein, and St. Clemens Church in Nebel. The single-nave, thatched church was built around 1240 from fieldstones and bricks; its furnishings include a group of apostles, a baptismal font and an altar with an altarpiece. The Old Cemetery at the church contains historic gravestones, also known as “storytelling gravestones.”
