Dithmarschen combines insights into cultural history with archaeological experiences and nature along the Wadden Sea. In Meldorf, the state museum spans more than 1,200 years; in Albersdorf, the Stone Age and hands-on activities take center stage. Friedrichskoog provides information about the national park, while guided walks on the tidal flats and hiking trails offer further perspectives on the region.

Museums and traces of history

The Dithmarscher Landesmuseum in Meldorf takes visitors through 1,200 years of Dithmarschen—from the wealth of the farmers’ republic to everyday rural life in the 1960s. This journey through time connects different eras and ways of life. In addition, Dithmarschen’s museum network brings together 19 museums, run both by paid staff and volunteers, across eleven locations. Another historical trace is St. Andrew’s Church in Weddingstedt: it is one of the five so-called original parish churches in Dithmarschen.

Experience the Stone Age and discover archaeological monuments

The Dithmarschen Stone Age Park in Albersdorf is an open-air archaeological museum. Visitors can experience and explore the way of life of hunters, fishers and gatherers 5,000 years ago. Hands-on activities include flint knapping, archery, making Stone Age jewelry, making fire and baking bread. Which activities are available may vary depending on the program.

The Stone Age Forest is right next to the park: around 40 hectares of natural open space are permanently accessible free of charge. The forest in Albersdorf also contains nine original archaeological monuments. The park focuses on hands-on activities, while the Stone Age Forest showcases the original monuments. Check the current access conditions before your visit.

National park and tidal flats on the coast

The Friedrichskoog National Park Station is an information center with a national park exhibition on the south side of the harbor. Friedrichskoog’s attractions also include a seal rescue and rehabilitation center and the Wadden Sea Conservation Station. From Friedrichskoog, the Conservation Station looks after the Wadden Sea National Park in the southern part of Dithmarschen: the stretch of coast under its care extends for 30 kilometers between Meldorfer Koog and the mouth of the Elbe.

On guided walks across the tidal flats along Dithmarschen’s coast, the group is accompanied by local, knowledgeable national park guides. At low tide, the diverse life of the Wadden Sea becomes visible. Tides and guided tour times vary, so check in advance which dates fit your trip.

Hiking trails of varying lengths

Near Lunden, the “Mötjensee and White-tailed Eagle” route is an easy 12.79-kilometer loop, suitable for hiking on flat terrain. A much longer route is the first stage of the North Sea–Baltic Sea Hiking Trail: it runs through Dithmarschen and is just under 40 kilometers long. The long-distance trail as a whole comprises five stages and runs from Meldorf to Kiel. Comparing the route lengths can help you gauge the scope of your hike. Route details may be updated, so check the latest description before setting out.

Cabbage, demonstrations and events

At the KOHLosseum’s Krautwerkstatt, demonstrations followed by tastings take place Tuesdays to Thursdays at 2, 3 and 4 p.m. From November 1 until Easter, only the 2 p.m. demonstration is held. Check the current schedule before your visit.

During Dithmarschen Cabbage Days, a varied program of farmers’ markets, town festivals, and sports and cultural events takes place throughout Dithmarschen. Individual events and dates change. If an event is important to your travel plans, check the dates in advance.

When choosing a hotel in Dithmarschen, you could start by considering whether cultural history, archaeology, the Wadden Sea or hiking will shape your stay. These different themes offer a concrete starting point for planning the rest of your trip.
