Church architecture and estate history

St. Mary’s is a Neo-Gothic fieldstone church built between 1857 and 1859. It was constructed after the older church in Basthorst was demolished in 1856; this predecessor church was first mentioned in 1319. The west tower is 43 metres high. Historic furnishings include a brass lectern dating from 1651. The lectern was made more than two centuries before the present church was built.

As an 800-year-old cultural monument, Basthorst Estate welcomes visitors. The listed estate complex is dated to the 17th to 20th centuries and originated as a medieval Schack estate dating from the 13th century. The three-winged manor house has a core dating from around 1750. A fortification stood on the estate around 1640. After it was demolished, the park was created in the 18th century; the northern moat preserves the former fortification layout.

Landscape, markets and events

The estate includes farmland and woodland, springs, streams and hedgerows. Markets are held regularly at Basthorst Estate, which is also home to small craft businesses. The traditional spring, autumn and Christmas markets attract many thousands of visitors every year. Cultural and equestrian events also take place throughout the year. Basthorst is also a motorsport venue, including for classic car rallies. Check the specific event dates before your trip.
