Drelsdorf brings together several different themes for a stay: traditional costume and cultural history, a Romanesque church, the Schirlbusch nature reserve, and trails through meadows, fields and the state forest. When planning, you can decide whether to focus primarily on collections, architectural history or outdoor activities.

Traditional Costume Museum and Collections

The folk collection of the Drelsdorf Traditional Costume Museum has been assembled since the 1950s. Its holdings are spread across nine rooms. The collection includes traditional costumes and Frisian domestic culture from the 17th to the 19th century. It also features jewellery and household items from earlier times. A nearly intact Frisian living room contains a historic chest dating from 1699.

A separate small collection comprises finds from the early and late Stone Age. The collection also includes the northernmost Neanderthal finds, including a hand axe. The range thus extends from traditional costumes and domestic culture to Stone Age finds—two distinctly different ways to explore the collections in Drelsdorf.

Dance and traditional costume are also part of the cultural offering. The Drelsdorf Dance and Traditional Costume Group performs international and German folk dances. Its reconstructed Drelsdorf costumes are based on local research and historical images. They were first shown publicly in 1984 at a harvest parade in Drelsdorf.

Church and Architectural History

The church in Drelsdorf is a Romanesque fieldstone church, built around 1200. A Renaissance altarpiece from the late 16th century adds a distinctly later element. The building therefore brings together Romanesque architecture and Renaissance furnishings. Visits are possible by prior arrangement with the church office.

Nature Reserve and Trails

The Schirlbusch nature reserve lies in the northeast of Drelsdorf and is known for its distinctive flora and fauna. For nature enthusiasts, it offers a specific protected area to explore, alongside the village’s cultural attractions.

Cycling, hiking and horse-riding trails run through meadows and fields, the state forest, and along the Ostenau. When choosing a route, you can take into account both your preferred way of getting around—on foot, by bike or on horseback—and the landscape. A nearby forest also has a fitness trail.
