Oldsum reveals its historic character through its thatched windmill, maritime and historical guided tours, and a recurring street theatre programme. Arts and crafts and small shops add to these local impressions. For excursions, the wider setting of the island of Föhr offers additional options for nature, culture and activities.

Windmill, guided tours and crafts

The thatched windmill is Oldsum’s landmark. It was rebuilt in 1901 and has been used as a private home since 1972. Historical and maritime guided tours through the old village centre add to the village’s history: they focus on different topics and complement the historical perspective with maritime themes. The recurring “Journey through Time in the Frisian Village of Oldsum” also revisits the village’s past—as a street theatre programme. If you plan to attend, check the individual dates separately.

The small shops sell art, ceramics, handicrafts, wool, cakes and preserves. Oldsum therefore brings together a range of cultural highlights: the windmill as a landmark, guided insights into the old village centre, a staged journey through time, and the offerings of the small shops. This combination means a visit to the village need not revolve around a single theme.

Excursions starting from Oldsum

Oldsum is considered a starting point for walking and cycling excursions through the surrounding marshland, towards the bird sanctuary north of the village, and along the dike to Dunsum and Utersum. These destinations offer different landscape settings to consider when planning: marshland, a bird sanctuary, and the dike, as well as routes towards the two other villages. Before setting out on a specific trip, check local access conditions and any temporary restrictions.

Föhr in the wider island setting

Föhr can only be reached by ship or by air. The W.D.R. catamaran, which is chartered to partner Adler-Schiffe, provides a fast passenger connection between Föhr, Amrum and Dagebüll. Check the timetable and availability for your specific travel date. For cycling, Föhr has more than 200 kilometres of designated cycle paths and five themed routes; these figures describe the island’s cycle network as a whole.

Föhr also offers a range of points of interest for nature and culture enthusiasts. Guided mudflat walks on Föhr give visitors the chance to observe lugworms, mussels, starfish and mudflat birds. An approximately eight-kilometre mudflat walk leads from Dunsum on Föhr to the northern tip of the neighbouring island of Amrum; tides and weather should be taken into account when planning this trip. The Föhr National Park Centre has exhibitions on habitats in the tidal zone, birds, the formation of the island, a harbour porpoise skeleton and mussels. The Museum Kunst der Westküste focuses on the sea and coast and features important German and Scandinavian artists from 1830 to 1930. Current exhibitions may change.
