Sankt Peter-Ording combines a 12-kilometer-long beach with nature experiences, a spa, museums and animal attractions. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can first consider whether the coast, the Wadden Sea, outdoor activities, swimming or culture is your main priority. The destination offers different options to suit these interests; the following places and activities can help you decide what to focus on during your trip.

Beach and Wadden Sea

The beach is 12 kilometers long and up to 2 kilometers wide. The surrounding landscape includes sandy beaches, dunes, salt marshes, fields and pine forests. Sankt Peter-Ording and the Eiderstedt peninsula lie within Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park, which is part of the German Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The nature discovery area introduces the sandy salt marshes, beach ridges, dunes and brackish-water reed beds of Sankt Peter-Ording at four large platforms and eight smaller stations. Three platforms are directly accessible from the sea dike and are intended to improve access to the experience and information facilities for people with limited mobility. South of the pier, beyond the dike, is the Wadden Sea World Heritage nature discovery area, where you can experience the Wadden Sea and learn more about it.

Discover nature and stay active

Along the Erlebnis-Promenade, the nature trail follows a wooden walkway through the natural surroundings between the beach clinic and Erlebnis-Hus. It offers a specific route, while the platforms and stations in the nature discovery area introduce different types of landscape. When planning, you can decide whether you would rather follow a route between two named points or explore the themes presented at the nature stations.

The wide beach offers kitesurfing conditions for beginners and professionals. Check local rules and conditions before taking part. The nature trail and the nature discovery area also have different focuses: the trail takes you through the natural surroundings, while the discovery area focuses on learning about the landscape and the Wadden Sea.

Swimming and wellness

The Dünen-Therme offers indoor and outdoor swimming, as well as a seawater wave pool. The facility also includes a sauna area and wellness services. The health and wellness center offers mud packs, thalassotherapy baths and massages. If you are planning a specific treatment, ask in advance about current availability and booking conditions.

Animals, history and crafts

West Coast Park & Robbarium is home to more than 800 animals from around the world and Germany’s largest seal facility, which is filled with pure North Sea water. The animal population and facility details may change over time.

The Eiderstedt Landscape Museum preserves historical objects and presents the history of Eiderstedt to residents and visitors. It complements nature and animal experiences with a historical perspective on the peninsula. At the North Sea Amber Museum, you can take part in an amber polishing workshop and turn amber into a piece of jewelry. Workshop availability may vary seasonally; check dates in advance.

Restaurants and getting there

Sankt Peter-Ording has six stilt restaurants overlooking the North Sea and the beach. The Ahoi restaurant is located in Erlebnis-Hus; its cuisine is influenced by Nordic and Asian traditions and focuses on fish. When choosing where to eat, you can therefore consider both views of the sea and beach and a focus on fish. Restaurant operations and menus may change.

For train travel, the route goes via Husum; the Eiderstedt Railway runs from Tönning to its terminus in Sankt Peter-Ording. Check the current timetable before departure to make sure the connection suits your travel dates.
