Vollerwiek on the Wadden Sea
Accommodation in Vollerwiek
Vollerwiek lies right next to the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site; around 45 percent of the municipality’s boundary is bordered by the Wadden Sea. The changing tides are especially important when planning your trip: guided mudflat hikes take place at low tide, while swimming in the North Sea is possible at the green bathing area at high tide. There are also paths along the dike and through the village, St. Martin’s Church, and seasonal offerings featuring berries and the Haubarg am Meer.
Mudflat hikes and trails
Guided mudflat hikes start at low tide at the Süderdeich/Wagenak intersection. The focus is on mudflat wildlife such as lugworms and cockles. Since tours and dates depend on the schedule, it’s worth checking the specific date in advance. This lets you plan your mudflat hike for a suitable low-tide time.
You can also explore Vollerwiek on foot or by bicycle. The paths run along the dike and through the village. This lets you choose between a route along the dike and one through the village. The two options offer different ways to explore the outdoors.
The bathing area and the tides
At the green bathing area, swimming in the North Sea is possible at high tide; at low tide, it provides access to the exposed mudflats. If you mainly want to swim, plan your visit around high tide; at low tide, the mudflats take center stage. Facilities include sandpits and showers. There is a restaurant nearby, and free parking is available. Facilities and seasonal offerings may change, so check the latest information before your visit.
Church and photography
St. Martin’s Church stands in the village center and dates back to 1113. Its carved altar is considered the oldest among the churches of Eiderstedt. Also in the village center, Galerie Küstenfocus offers photography-focused visits and photo walks. Gallery opening hours and photo walk dates may vary. Check in advance if you’re planning a visit or photo walk in particular.
Seasonal refreshments and regional products
In July and August, you can pick raspberries at Hof Jürgens in Vollerwiek. The Glücks-Café serves fresh berry cake; homemade preserves and berry drinks are also available there. The season and offerings may vary from year to year. A quick check in advance will help you plan for the berry offerings during your stay.
At the historic Haubarg am Meer, dating from 1849, Dat WeinCafé serves homemade cakes, waffles, light meals and drinks. Guided tours explain the building’s architecture and history in the context of Eiderstedt. It operates seasonally from April to October; schedules may change. Check current opening hours if you’re planning a café visit or tour in particular.
