Timmendorfer Strand – Beach, Pier and Culture
Accommodation in Timmendorfer Strand
Seven kilometres of fine sandy beach with shallow, clear Baltic Sea waters define Timmendorfer Strand. The town also offers the Maritim Pier, the old spa park, cultural events and water sports. To plan your stay, you can organise your options around different interests: time by the sea, walks, events or activities on the water.
Beach and Maritim Pier
The fine sandy beach stretches for seven kilometres, and the Baltic Sea water is shallow and clear. The Maritim Pier offers another view of the sea: it extends 250 metres into the Baltic Sea and has a 427-metre-long circular promenade. These two measurements describe different parts of the structure. The seven-metre-wide pier head has seating and offers unobstructed views of the Baltic Sea. Mooring facilities for sports and passenger boats are also part of the pier. The beach, a walk along the promenade and views of the water offer different ways to spend time by the sea.
Spa Park and Town Centre
The old spa park offers a different setting for a walk. Water lilies grow in its three ponds, which are also home to waterfowl. Delicate, arched footbridges connect the ponds, and the lawns invite you to stroll. If you are looking for a public meeting place in the town centre rather than leafy paths, head to Timmendorfer Platz. It serves as a central gathering place and is also an open-air lounge.
Art, Events and Water Sports
Near the beach stands the glass Trinkkurhalle, a listed building. It hosts changing exhibitions, lectures and concerts; further events take place in the open-air music pavilion. The art trail runs along the curving beach promenade and includes a sculpture by Udo Lindenberg. Cultural events and public art are therefore close to the activities on the water.
The beach volleyball championship is a major attraction in Timmendorfer Strand: 32 teams compete over four days for the German championship title. Event details may change. If you are planning your trip around it, check the dates in advance. Windsurfing, catamaran sailing and stand-up paddleboarding are also available in Timmendorfer Strand and Niendorf. Courses include lessons for beginners and advanced participants, as well as private tuition; course availability may vary by season.
Nature and Train Travel
Nature and landscape conservation are also part of the town's character: the Aalbeek lowlands and the northern part of Lake Hemmelsdorf have been protected since 1984 and designated as Natura 2000 sites.
For rail travel, direct Intercity connections run from Hamburg and the Rhine-Ruhr region to Lübeck Bay. Regional trains to Timmendorfer Strand run hourly from Hamburg via Lübeck. The station is a few minutes from the town centre and can be reached on foot or by taxi. Check the timetable for your travel day if the train connection is important to your plans.
