Pinneberg offers several clearly distinct themes to consider when planning a stay: the urban forest and parks for exercise, as well as cultural attractions in the town. Further afield in Pinneberg district, gardens and marshland add to the picture.

Green spaces and exercise in Pinneberg

Pinneberger Fahlt is a wooded area and recreational destination in the Pinneberg urban forest. It is used for walking, jogging, and sports activities. Exercise is therefore as much a part of Fahlt’s character as its woodland setting. If you would like to include urban green spaces in your travel plans, it is a distinct place to visit in Pinneberg.

The tree park in Pinneberg is a park featuring the 26 “Trees of the Year.” The idea originated as part of the International Garden Show igs Hamburg 2013, in the Pinneberger Baumschulland exhibition area. The combination of trees and garden-show history gives the park a different focus from Fahlt’s woodland and recreation area.

Drosteipark also offers opportunities for exercise in Pinneberg: just behind the town center, it has walking paths and opportunities for sports and exercise. Unlike Fahlt, the focus here is on a park immediately behind the town center; both green spaces offer different ways to include exercise in your stay.

Culture in the town

The Drostei is the cultural center of Pinneberg district. Its program includes exhibitions, concerts, and literary events. It thus complements the town’s green spaces with a cultural program spanning several fields. The Pinneberg Tree Nursery Museum has a narrower thematic focus: it is the only museum in the German-speaking world devoted to the tree nursery industry.

These places offer different perspectives on Pinneberg: the parks are for walks and exercise, while the Drostei and Tree Nursery Museum focus on culture and the tree nursery industry. When planning your stay, you can consider whether you would prefer to spend most of your time in urban green spaces or include cultural interests as well.

Garden culture and landscapes in the wider Pinneberg district

Outside the town of Pinneberg, the district also has gardens with a range of different focuses. The Ellerhoop Arboretum covers 17.3 hectares and features a variety of themed gardens. The Uetersen Rosarium was opened to the public on June 23, 1934, to mark the town’s 700th anniversary. The two places therefore offer different points of interest for garden enthusiasts: themed gardens in Ellerhoop and the history of the rosarium in Uetersen.

During the official rose season, from mid-June to early September, a free guided tour takes place at the Uetersen Rosarium every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Check the seasonal dates before your trip. This lets you distinguish a scheduled tour from a visit focused on exploring the garden without a fixed event program.

The district’s landscape can also be seen in its protected areas and marshland. The Haseldorfer Binnenelbe with Elbvorland nature reserve is one of the largest contiguous nature reserves outside the coastal areas of Schleswig-Holstein. A large cormorant breeding colony is located in a protected area there. The NABU Wedeler Marsch bird station can only be reached on foot or by bicycle; visitors can watch bird migration there at sunrise or sunset.

At the Elbmarschenhaus, visitors can learn about the history and distinctive features of the marsh and experience techniques from bygone times firsthand. Together with the protected areas and birdwatching, this offers a different focus from the gardens and cultural venues. When planning, it is therefore helpful to consider whether you want to focus your stay mainly on Pinneberg itself or also on places and themes elsewhere in the district.
