Großharrie: Village History and Cycling
Accommodation in Großharrie
When choosing a hotel in Großharrie, you can take local history, culture, and cycling into account as well as your stay. The historic village green, the Church of the Holy Spirit in Bokhorst, and the Vicelinweg offer different points of interest. The Dosenmoor adds raised bogs, nature conservation, and trails to the range of topics. You can first decide whether you are most interested in historic landmarks, cultural events, landscapes, or a cycling tour.
Village History and Culture
The Ostertor was the first and, for a long time, the only entrance to the historic village green. The Peace Oak, which dates from 1872, and the Twin Oak, commemorating the unification of Schleswig-Holstein, stand there. Großharrie has existed for more than 850 years. The village green thus offers three perspectives on the past: its former access, a tree dated to 1872, and the commemoration of Schleswig-Holstein’s unification.
The Church of the Holy Spirit in Bokhorst also serves the residents of Großharrie. Concerts, readings, church cinema events, book presentations, and community celebrations take place there. These events cater to a range of cultural interests—from music and literature to film and community festivities.
Dosenmoor: Raised Bog and Trails
The Dosenmoor is a raised bog with peat layers up to eight meters thick. It formed after the last Ice Age and was designated a nature reserve in the early 1980s. This combines geological origins, a specific maximum depth, and a later protected status. The figure “up to eight meters” indicates an upper limit, not a uniform depth throughout.
The Dosenmoor provides a habitat for wild boar and greylag geese. A circular trail goes around the bog, while a single path crosses the area. The two routes therefore differ in their layout: one loops around the bog, while the other crosses it.
Cycling Routes and Project Timeline
On its return route to Neumünster, the Vicelinweg passes through Großharrie as a circular cycling route. Another cycling connection concerns Tasdorfer Weg: the announcement of April 24, 2026, proposed a roughly two-kilometer cycle path between Tasdorf and Großharrie. Construction was scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026, with completion planned for mid-2027. This distinguishes the description of the existing cycling route from the project announced at the time and its planned timeline.
Plön as a Broader Travel Destination
The district of Plön, part of the broader travel destination of Plön, lies between the Baltic Sea and Holstein Switzerland. It has around 50 kilometers of Baltic Sea coastline and around 80 lakes. These include Lake Großer Plöner See, covering 29 km², and Lake Selenter See, covering 22 km². Activities along the district’s Baltic Sea coast include swimming, sailing, surfing, diving, boat trips, offshore sailing trips, cutter trips, and surf fishing. Large parts of the district belong to the 75,000-hectare Holstein Switzerland Nature Park, which offers opportunities to enjoy nature and see rare animals. The lakes, coast, and nature park thus provide a broader scenic setting for planning a trip to the wider Plön destination.
