Klausdorf: Bodden Lagoon, Nature and Historic Estate
Accommodation in Klausdorf
On February 5, 2018, Klausdorf was officially recognized as a state-approved recreational resort. The village combines beautiful beaches right on the Bodden Lagoon with opportunities for cycling through fields and forests, hiking in nature and paddling on the lagoon. The historic estate is another attraction. Some of the national park and harbor visitor sites described here are in the municipality of Klausdorf, but not in the village of Klausdorf itself.
Estate and Park
Some of the historic estate’s surviving buildings and features include the former inspector’s house, three utility buildings, the orangery and the park, with its wall and observation tower. The estate park is protected as a historic monument. The inspector’s house is a neo-Baroque building dating from around 1890. The former large bull barn underwent extensive renovation in 2006 and was converted into the Vorpommernhus. The building houses a small gallery and the tourist information and leisure center, hosts cultural events and serves as the village hall.
The reconstructed espalier fruit garden is also in the estate park. It consists of four beds, each about 70 meters long. The beds contain old and fine varieties of trees and shrubs, including berries, shrub fruit, pome fruit and wall-trained fruit trees. The former observation tower in the protected estate park was restored in 2012 and converted into the Klausdorf Species Conservation Tower.
Nature and Activities in Klausdorf
In Klausdorf, cycling routes pass through fields and forests, you can hike in nature, and you can paddle on the Bodden Lagoon. The beaches are right on the lagoon. Cranes, white-tailed eagles and many other animals also make Klausdorf a draw for nature lovers. Activities on land, the water and wildlife each offer a different way to experience nature.
Barhöft and Other Destinations in the Municipality
Barhöft is a district of the municipality of Klausdorf. The national park exhibition is located there in the Haus am Kliff, near the harbor, at the top of the Barhöft cliff and next to the observation tower, which is visible from afar. From the harbor, follow the signs toward the cliff. Using photos, drawings and engaging exhibits, the exhibition introduces visitors to the protected landscape, and is also suitable for adults and international visitors. It is accessible to wheelchair users; accessible parking spaces are available at the building. Check the latest visitor information before your visit.
The 17-meter-high observation tower next to the national park exhibition offers views across large parts of the national park, as well as of islands, wind flats, the Bodden Lagoon and the Baltic Sea. Another trail along the Barhöft cliff starts at the parking lot in Zarrenzin and follows the old cliff to Barhöft. There is a small viewing platform at the parking lot, with views of the Werder Islands and the Bodden waters.
All berths in Barhöft harbor have electricity and drinking water. Kayak tours to Hiddensee are listed as an option from the harbor; fishing in waters rich in fish is also listed as an option there.
