Mucheln is characterised by fields, hills, forests and bodies of water; this landscape surrounds its four districts. It is well suited to walks and can be explored on foot or by bicycle during the season. Secluded spots are ideal for picnics. If you are planning a hotel stay in Mucheln, you can consider whether walks, cycling tours or picnic breaks should be the main focus.

Landscape and Nature in Mucheln

The Lebrader Teiche and Gödfeldteiche nature reserves are located near Mucheln and offer opportunities to observe flora and fauna. This adds a distinct focus on nature observation to exploring the landscape. Mucheln is on the L 53.

The wider destination of Plön

Within the wider destination of Plön, the district of Plön lies between the Baltic Sea and Holstein Switzerland. The district includes around 80 lakes, including the Great Plön Lake, covering 29 km², and Lake Selent, covering 22 km². The district also has around 50 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline. Watching white-tailed eagles over the Great Plön Lake is considered an impressive nature experience; a sighting is not guaranteed.

There are opportunities for swimming along the district of Plön’s Baltic Sea coast, from Mönkeberg to Sehlendorfer Strand. Sailing, surfing, diving, boat excursions, offshore trips, cutter trips and surf fishing are also possible there.

There is also a bathing area on Prinzeninsel with a gently sloping sandy beach about 100 metres wide. It can only be reached on foot or by bicycle. Visitor facilities may change seasonally.

Large parts of the district belong to Holstein Switzerland Nature Park. The nature park covers 75,000 hectares and offers space for nature experiences as well as rare animals. The district’s gently rolling landscape also provides suitable conditions for cycling and hiking tours. Regional options include a signposted 850 km cycling route network and developed Nordic walking trails; routes may change in the future.

One longer cycling option is the two-day “Baltic Sea Coast – Holstein Switzerland” tour. It starts in Kiel and runs via Plön and Lütjenburg to the Baltic Sea coast, and is particularly suitable for pedelecs. As route details may change, it is advisable to check the current route before setting out.

There are various options on the water, too: the Schwentine water trail can be explored by canoe in the district of Plön; the lakes are also travelled by sailboat or excursion boat. The canoe option on the Schwentine and trips on the lakes thus differ in terms of the body of water and mode of transport.

Mucheln and the regional context

When choosing a hotel destination, it helps to consider the scale you want: Mucheln is known for its landscape and nature observation; lakes, the coast, the nature park and district-wide tours broaden the focus to the wider destination of Plön. This lets you distinguish between a stay focused on local nature and an interest in other attractions in the district of Plön.
