Schlesen lies on the northeastern shore of Lake Dobersdorf. The village is set in a hilly landscape with numerous hedgerows. Walking and cycling trails run around the lake and through nearby areas; along the way, they pass through fields, forests and villages. This brings together the lakeshore and routes through the rural surroundings as distinct landscape experiences. The lake provides a clear point of reference when finding your way during a stay, while the routes also lead through the surrounding villages.

Lake, trails and nature conservation

A walk around Lake Dobersdorf can begin at the bathing area. In summer, there is a bathing island there. Another important point when planning time by the water: surfing and boating on the lake are prohibited for nature conservation reasons, to avoid disturbing the birdlife. This means that walking and cycling trails on land go hand in hand with clearly defined limits on activities on the water.

Lake Dobersdorf is considered locally to be rich in fish and suitable for anglers. On the eastern shore lies the Natura 2000 Special Area of Conservation (SAC) “Calcareous Lowland Meadow on the Eastern Shore of Lake Dobersdorf.” The lake, its birdlife and its protected shore landscape are among the various features that shape a stay in Schlesen.

Village history in its buildings

A preserved school building dating from 1891 is now used as a village community centre. Its form and appearance have been retained. The building brings together a former and a present-day function: it was built as a school and now serves as a community centre. A restored old smithy is another local landmark. The village chronicle also records local history. The village’s built heritage and written records offer different ways to explore Schlesen’s past. Schlesen was formerly associated with Salzau Estate.
