The village’s history offers another point of interest: Stolpe is considered to have been founded by the Slavs around 800 on the Limes Saxoniae.

Walking and Cycling by Lake Stolpe

The loop around Lake Stolpe is about 8 km long; allow approximately 2.5 hours. It starts at Stolpe’s school and follows the Gärtnersteg footbridge to a path above the lake. From there, you can enjoy views across the water. Further along, the route reaches the old cobbled road to Gut Perdoel, crosses the Alte Schwentine and continues to its mouth at Lake Stolpe. The route description dates from 2014. Check trail conditions, signage and accessibility locally.

There are also several named cycling routes in the area. In Stolpe, the Vicelinweg follows the Gärtnersteg alongside Lake Stolpe through a hedgerow landscape; a Vicelinweg loop also passes through the village. The red main route of the Limes Saxoniae passes through Stolpe, with a detour to the bathing area at Lake Stolpe. Check the route, signage and conditions for taking the detour before setting off.

Stolpe Moor and the Landscape

Stolpe Moor is a fen along the Schierenseer Au, which flows into Lake Stolpe to the south. The municipality acquired land in the moor for nature conservation purposes. Galloway cattle graze the wet meadows to maintain the character of the wet grassland; management practices may change over time. Along the lakeshore, alder carr gives way to a broad reedbed. The watercourse, moorland and lakeside vegetation give the landscape a range of ecological features.
