Wankendorf: Lakes, Local History and Activities
Accommodation in Wankendorf
Wankendorf lies on the edge of Holstein Switzerland and combines a lake landscape, local history and outdoor activities. The accessible lakes, historic townscape and seasonal leisure activities offer practical points of reference when planning your trip.
Lake Landscape and Geology
There are six lakes in the immediate vicinity of Wankendorf, accessible on foot or by bicycle. There is a bathing area at Schierensee; check the current conditions before swimming. The six lakes form a broader landscape feature, while the bathing area at Schierensee provides a specific place to swim. The Wankendorf lake district and the area around Bornhöved are considered a terminal moraine landscape. The landscape around Wankendorf is also considered to have been shaped during the second and third advances.
Church and Local History
The neo-Gothic church and parsonage were built in 1894 on the border between Wankendorf and Stolpe; the cemetery was established in the same year alongside the neighboring church.
Wankendorf Local History Museum
The Wankendorf Local History Museum is located at Bahnhofstr. 60. Permanent or special exhibitions explore the distinctive features and everyday life of the Wankendorf region. The church, parsonage and cemetery provide a historic point of reference dating to 1894; the museum focuses on regional characteristics and everyday life. This brings a single architectural ensemble alongside a broader regional perspective. Before your visit, check the current opening hours and exhibition program.
Cycling and Leisure
The 39-kilometer Land cycling route passes through Wankendorf and runs between Stocksee, Schmalensee, Belau, Stolpe and Wahlstorf. The route length gives you a concrete indication of how extensive the tour is. Routes may be updated or rerouted, so check the current route before setting out.
The skate park at the Old Station is described as available year-round; check its current status before your visit if needed. During the summer season, visitors can use a tennis facility with seven clay courts in the Wankendorf lake district. The activities therefore differ in their seasonality: the skate park is available year-round, while tennis is limited to the summer season. Check access to the tennis facility on site.
