Alt Duvenstedt lies on the edge of Hüttener Berge Nature Park and combines the natural landscape of the park with tangible traces of the village’s history. Five regional cycling and hiking circular routes are signposted in the village. This gives you a choice of different focuses for planning your trip: nature, activity and culture.

Nature Park and Duvenstedt Moor

The terminal moraine landscape, shaped by the Ice Age, includes hedgerows, avenues, lakes, forests and moors. Duvenstedt Moor, a raised bog and remarkable biotope with the prospect of regeneration, lies within the municipality. Alt Duvenstedt is one of two municipalities in central Holstein located within HĂĽttener Berge Nature Park. The moor gives the nature theme a specific local connection, while the terminal moraine landscape provides the broader setting.

Planning Cycling and Hiking Routes

Five regional cycling and hiking circular routes are signposted in Alt Duvenstedt. Several routes connect the village to the wider cycling and hiking network. There are several rest areas with shelters along the routes, providing places to take a break. The signposted circular routes and the connections to the wider network offer different ways to plan: the five circular routes provide a selection of regional tours, while the other routes connect to the wider network.

Bistensee Lake lies along these routes. There is no public bathing area there because the surrounding land is privately owned. A path about 300 metres long offers views across the lowlands of the Otterbek and Stente. One cycling and hiking loop also includes Kolonistenhof. The routes are included in the Tourist Information NOK route planners; when planning, check the current availability of these planning tools and the latest route information.

Local History: Name, Mill and Museum

The name “Duvenstede” first appears in written records in 1328. Stenten Mill was built between 1697 and 1699 and is considered a local landmark; its sails are well preserved. The Alt Duvenstedt Village Museum includes a reconstruction of an old oven and a restored half-timbered wall dating from 1780. The dates span from the first written record of the name in the 14th century to a museum object from the late 18th century. The mill and half-timbered wall provide further architectural points of reference for the village’s history.
