Krummwisch – Hiking, Cycling and Canal History
Accommodation in Krummwisch
Krummwisch is a destination for travelers looking to combine hiking trails, cycling and the history of the Eider Canal. Königsförde Lock and a section of the old Eider Canal can be explored in the village. Other routes lead through the countryside around Krummwisch; cyclists will also encounter the longer course of the Kiel Canal Route. When planning, it is worth considering two scales: individual trails and their specific landscapes, and a regional cycling network with several types of tours.
Lock and Eider Canal on Foot
Königsförde Lock is one of the six chamber locks built to overcome the elevation difference of the old Eider Canal. The lock and the adjacent wooden Dutch swing bridge were restored in 1987 and 1988. Information boards at the lock provide hikers with details about the historic site. One hiking route includes crossing the historic drawbridge next to the lock. Check access to the bridge locally before your visit, as accessibility may change.
This brings together a structure, canal history and a section of trail that you can experience on foot in one place. The lock is part of a larger engineering context: six chamber locks were used to overcome the canal’s elevation difference. At Königsförde Lock, you can understand this context by looking at the structure and the adjacent bridge.
Hiking Trails Through Different Landscapes
A hiking route near Krummwisch passes the Stoffsee Nature Reserve. The inland lake, covering around 14 hectares, is characterized by wet meadows and fen plants; it also offers opportunities to observe waterbirds. The route thus draws attention to a protected landscape and its flora and fauna. Check current access conditions before setting out.
Another route leads from Krummwisch toward Heisch. It descends from about 20 meters above sea level into the valley of the former Alte Eider and crosses the river on a bridge. Compared with the trail by Stoffsee, this route focuses on changes in elevation and the river valley, while wet meadows, fen plants and waterbirds shape the impressions described at the lake.
Gut Groß Nordsee and Local History
The history of technology and the village offers another way to discover Krummwisch. Gut Groß Nordsee is first documented in the 13th century. The estate was associated with a brickworks that produced 8 to 10 million bricks annually during its historic operation. The Elysium Chapel was built on a small hill opposite the estate. Together, these three features point to the estate’s early history, industrial brick production and a religious building at a named site opposite the estate.
Cycling the Kiel Canal Route
Krummwisch is part of the Kiel Canal Route. The route runs mainly along well-maintained paths and quiet country and farm roads. Cyclists and pedestrians can also use service roads along the Kiel Canal to shorten the distance. Information about path conditions and traffic refers to the route as a whole; it does not necessarily describe every individual section. Check current maps and access information before your ride, as path conditions, traffic and accessibility may change.
For planning tours in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district, a broader regional network is available: there are five long-distance cycle routes, five e-bike tours and twelve themed routes ranging from 24 to 79 kilometers. There is also a signposted cycling network of 1,000 kilometers. The themed routes provide an indication of the length of individual tours; the cycling network describes a larger overall scale. Check current maps before your ride, as the routes on offer may change.
