Rumohr: Hiking Trails, Moorland and History
Accommodation in Rumohr
Rumohr can be explored through three distinct themes: hiking trails in the municipal area, moorland and historical connections to the area. The municipality lies partly within Westensee Nature Park, while the nature park is also nearby. When planning your trip, it is helpful to distinguish between the municipality itself and the wider attractions of the nature park and district. This makes it clear which trails run through Rumohr and which nature experiences belong to the surrounding area.
Moorland and Local History
Moorland areas still exist in Rumohr and Rotenhahn. This enduring landscape feature is also reflected in local history: the name Rumohr derives from the phrase “rough moor”; in 1245, Rumohr was recorded under the name “Rummore”. The wavy bar on the municipal coat of arms represents the municipality’s moorland. The two herons are also understood as a reference to Rumohr and Rotenhahn. Together, the place name, moorland and coat of arms bring the historical interpretation of the area together.
Hiking Trails Around Rumohr
The European long-distance hiking trail E1 runs through the municipality, as does the North Sea–Baltic Sea Hiking Trail. In addition, a route of the Norddeutschland e. V. Hiking Association crosses the municipal area. These three route references give you different names to use for orientation: two named trails and one route of the hiking association. There are 17 circular hiking trails mapped in the Westensee Nature Park tourism area. The nature park area also offers marked hiking trails and public field and forest paths. Before setting out, check the maps and the availability of your desired route.
Nature Park and Activities in the Wider Area
Nearby Westensee Nature Park was shaped by the Ice Age. Gentle hills and valleys alternate with meadows, forests, lakes and moors. Small nature reserves and forest nature trails with information boards add to the nature experience. The TĂĽteberg viewpoint offers panoramic views across Westensee towards Kiel. Canoe and kayak trips on the Eiderring Canal can take you towards the Kiel Canal or Westensee. If you would like to paddle, check in advance whether rentals are available for your dates; availability may vary.
Rendsburg-Eckernförde as a Broader Travel Destination
The broader travel destination of Rendsburg-Eckernförde extends beyond Rumohr. Rendsburg-Eckernförde district has four nature parks, and its signposted cycling network covers more than 1,000 kilometres. The district’s Baltic Sea coast is 55 kilometres long. Westensee Nature Park also has four themed cycling routes. Westensee-Obere Eider Nature Park is characterised by numerous lake complexes in the Schleswig-Holstein Uplands. It includes Westensee, which covers around 7 km² and is a popular excursion destination. The banks of the Eider in the nature park provide a habitat for kingfishers. These regional landscape and cycling themes complement the hiking trails and moorland that characterise Rumohr itself.
