Schnarup-Thumby: Church, History and Landscape
Accommodation in Schnarup-Thumby
Schnarup-Thumby is nestled in a varied, hilly cultural landscape shaped by centuries of history. The municipality is considered agricultural and distinctly rural: traditional Angeliter hedgerows shape the landscape; relatively little traffic and a tranquil character are also part of its setting. St. John’s Church stands in Angeln, just outside the settlement.
St. John’s: A Church Built in Several Phases
St. John’s Church was built around 1250 as a late Romanesque fieldstone church. Its basic layout consists of a rectangular nave and a narrower, set-back chancel. The chancel is set back from the nave and forms a distinct part of the overall layout. The original east windows have also been preserved, as have the granite portal on the south side and the brick portal on the north.
The west wall dates from 1799, and the south porch from 1830. In 1891–1892, architect Adalbert Hotzen redesigned the church in the Neo-Gothic style. This renovation gave the interior a basilica-like appearance; parts of the medieval furnishings were preserved. The original layout, dating from around 1250, and later changes from the 18th and 19th centuries thus stand side by side as distinct historical layers.
A wooden bell tower, dated to 1490, stands apart from the church building. Johannes Otzen is also part of the area’s history: the architect was born in the municipality. The Neo-Gothic renovation of St. John’s, however, is attributed to Adalbert Hotzen.
Rural Surroundings and Community Life
The municipality also has an inn; cultural and sporting activities are part of community life. Unlike the church as a single building, these features reflect everyday life and community in the area.
The Wider Setting of Schleswig-Flensburg
For a wider view beyond the village, the broader destination of Schleswig-Flensburg offers further cultural and landscape highlights. Haithabu and the Danevirke have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since June 2018. More than 25 kilometres of the Danevirke rampart still remain. With a total area of 773 hectares, Geltinger Birk is the largest nature reserve in the Schleswig-Flensburg district.
The Idstedt memorial site and museum provide information about German-Danish history surrounding the uprising of 1848 and the Battle of Idstedt. From 1986 to 2012, Kappeln served as a filming location for the TV series “Der Landarzt” under the name “Deekelsen”.
More than 130 bird species can be observed on Holnis, including around 65 breeding species. Geltinger Birk has well-maintained paths and guided walks that offer insights into local flora and fauna. The Schlei Nature Park offers guided nature tours; the landscape is also crossed by the Viking-Frisian Way, the Ox Road and 15 signposted themed cycling routes.
The Schlei, an inlet of the Baltic Sea, is at the heart of the wider Schlei Nature Park region. Bridges and ferries provide crossing points over the Schlei in the wider Schlei region. Availability and operating conditions may vary seasonally.
