Tolk brings together the history of its village church, cycling and hiking routes, and the Tolk-Schau family and amusement park. This gives you several different themes to consider when planning your trip: local history, routes through the village and its wider surroundings, or a visit to the amusement park. The landscape is also shaped by the village’s location on the edge of a plateau enclosed by a former glacial valley.

Landscape and waterways

The Wellspang-Au flows from nearby Langsee and reaches the Schlei as the Füsinger-Au. The river therefore changes its name along its course before reaching the Schlei. Together with Tolk’s location on the plateau and the former glacial valley, the river’s course offers another perspective on the landscape around the village.

Local history at the church

Tolk was first mentioned in 1192 in a deed of gift issued by Bishop Waldemar. The church’s fieldstone walls have endured for more than 800 years. Some stones bear pre-Christian markings, suggesting that the church may stand on a former place of worship. A village renewal programme in 1985 aimed to preserve valuable buildings that shape the village’s appearance. Tolk thus brings together early written records, visible traces at the church, and a later programme to preserve the village’s character.

Cycling and hiking routes

Tolk and its wider surroundings have an extensive network of cycling routes. The approximately 30-kilometre KirchTörn starts at the church in Tolk, where visitors can park their cars. Check the current parking situation in advance. The KreisbahnTörn passes through Tolk between Taarstedt and Böklund. The KirchTörn therefore offers a starting point in the village, while the KreisbahnTörn is defined by its connection between two other places.

There are also local hiking routes in Tolk. The regional route network includes standardised signposting, overview maps and information boards to help with navigation. As signs may be adjusted and individual route details updated, check the latest information before setting out. Cycling and hiking routes offer different ways to explore Tolk and its surroundings, and the route features described need not be the same for every trail.

Tolk-Schau

The Tolk-Schau family and amusement park is located in Tolk and features more than 100 attractions as well as over 100 life-size prehistoric animals. The park also has playgrounds, a miniature railway, picnic areas, a café and snack options. Pets can be found throughout the park. The many features listed make Tolk-Schau a destination in its own right, alongside the village routes and local history.

Getting here and finding your way

To drive to Tolk-Schau, take exit 5 Schleswig/Schuby on the A7 and then follow the direction of Kappeln for about 12 kilometres. Check the signs before setting off, as directions may change. Tolk is served by public transport via several stops; there is a bus turning area near the former administrative building. Individual services may change, so check the current timetable for your journey.

Historical context in Schleswig-Flensburg

In the wider destination of Schleswig-Flensburg, Haithabu and the Danewerk are further points of historical interest: both have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since June 2018. More than 25 kilometres of the Danewerk rampart are still preserved today. This regional context complements Tolk’s local history without implying that the different places are the same.
