Horst (Holstein): Church, outdoor pool and cycling routes
Accommodation in Horst
Horst (Holstein) combines culture, leisure and cycling. For planning a stay, St. Jürgen’s Church, the outdoor pool and several routes with different courses provide concrete starting points. The farm shop at Hof Dannwisch also adds a connection to food and agriculture.
St. Jürgen’s Church and its painted ceiling
St. Jürgen’s Church has a large painted ceiling made of spruce boards. The ceiling paintings were uncovered and restored during the church’s interior renovation in 1965. This architectural detail can therefore be linked to a specific chapter in the church’s history. The bell tower also contains a chapel that serves as a place for cyclists to pause and reflect. Access arrangements may change; check them before visiting.
Three cycling routes with different features
The Storchentörn begins and ends at Horst station. Along the way, the route passes through Hohenfelde and Glindesmoor; quiet paths, broad meadows and fields shape the course there. In the marshland, damp meadows and open spaces provide suitable conditions for raising young storks. The Storchentörn also offers the possibility of seeing storks, though sightings are not guaranteed. For orientation, it is marked with a green stork on a white background.
The Sommertörn passes through parts of Kiebitzreihe and Sommerland. Meadows, fields and typical waterways shape the landscape before the route returns to Horst. Its route marker is a green sun on a white background. The Kiebitztörn has a specified distance: the 34-kilometre route begins at Horst station and leads into the Königsmoor conservation area. You may encounter lapwings there; broad fields and rural tranquillity shape the landscape. The routes thus differ both in their markers and in the landscapes described, as well as in the expressly stated distance of the Kiebitztörn.
Swimming and time outdoors
Horst outdoor pool has six 50-metre lanes, a non-swimmer area, diving boards at heights of one and three metres, and a three-metre platform. There is also a separate toddlers’ pool and loungers in the outdoor area. Swimming, diving and relaxing outdoors are all among the options. The facilities can help you decide which activities are of interest during your stay, without confusing the different pool and diving areas.
Farm shop and agriculture
The farm shop at Hof Dannwisch sells vegetables, fresh sausage and cheese from its own dairy. The availability of individual products may vary; if you are going there for a particular item, check its availability in advance. Hof Dannwisch switched to biodynamic farming in 1957 and operates according to Demeter standards. The farm shop and its agricultural practices thus offer two different points of interest: shopping for the food on offer and learning about the development of its farming methods.
Getting to the Storchentörn
By car, you can reach the Storchentörn via the A23. Take the Horst/Elmshorn exit and follow the signs towards Horst station. The park-and-ride car park at the station is right at the starting point of the Storchentörn; check its availability before travelling. Also check current road and route conditions before setting out.
