Posterstein offers several different highlights to consider when planning a trip: a castle and museum, a late Gothic church, and two trails with their own distinct character. The Holzmichel Trail is a loop just under four kilometres long through Posterstein; the Sprotte Water Adventure Trail runs from the castle to Schmölln. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Posterstein, these highlights can help you decide what kind of stay you would like.

Burg Posterstein: Museum and Views

A visit to the Museum Burg Posterstein includes access to the castle dungeon and a climb up the 25-metre-high keep. Its viewing platform offers views across the Altenburger Land in all weather.

On the upper floor, the museum presents exhibitions on the region’s cultural history, including one on the history of the salon of the Duchess of Courland. Individual exhibitions may change; if you have a particular theme in mind, check the current programme before your trip.

The museum regularly presents changing special exhibitions, special holiday programmes and activities for schools; children’s birthday parties can also be held there. If you have a particular activity in mind, check the current programme details before your trip.

The family exhibition “The Children’s Castle” adds interactive and engaging displays to the museum’s offerings. Children can explore the history from the knights to the era of the salon ladies through play.

Church and Historical Design

The late Gothic church in Posterstein was built by the lords of Posterstein Castle and has been a branch church of Nöbdenitz since the 16th century. Its Baroque woodcarvings adorn the altar, pulpit and gallery with plant motifs and Christian symbols. The plant motifs and religious imagery offer two distinct themes. Unlike the museum, which explores regional cultural history and the Duchess’s salon, the focus here is on the Baroque design of the church interior.

Trails through Posterstein and Along the Water

The Holzmichel Trail is just under four kilometres long. It passes through the half-timbered village of Posterstein, under a motorway bridge built in 1938, and on to the suspension bridges of the Sprotte Adventure Trail. The loop returns to Posterstein via the RothenmĂĽhle and past the cemetery. The trail also crosses orchards and passes through small wooded areas; there is a shelter, viewpoints and rest areas along the Holzmichel Trail.

The Sprotte Water Adventure Trail runs from Burg Posterstein to Schmölln. Along the nine-kilometre route, there are twelve interactive stations and activities focused on life by the water. The two trails are easy to distinguish by length and theme: the Holzmichel Trail is just under four kilometres long and loops through Posterstein, while the Sprotte Trail covers nine kilometres and features activities centred on water. This can help you decide whether the shorter trail through the village and countryside or the longer water-themed route is a better fit for your outing.
