Explore Schmölln through a range of interests: button-making shapes the town’s museum, while the Sprotte Water Adventure Trail combines interactive stops with a nine-kilometre route. The cycling tours have different connections to Schmölln: a tour around Schmölln, particularly recommended for families, starts in the town centre and covers about 35 kilometres; Schmölln is also a stop on the approximately 65-kilometre cycling tour through the Altenburger Obstland, and the Thuringian Cities Route also passes through Schmölln. The town church, market and attractions in the districts add to the picture. This gives you the option to weigh up cultural history, activities on the water and cycling tours when choosing where to stay.

Button-making history and the townscape

The Schmölln Button and Regional Museum offers an overview of the changing history of the local button industry. The production of buttons made from tagua nuts played a particularly important role. Exhibits include button-making materials, various tools and historical machinery. The Button Trail once had smaller and larger button factories at around 18 locations—another point of interest in Schmölln’s industrial history.

The museum offers an audio guide for families and children, as well as workshops for children and young people. Guided tours of the permanent exhibition are available by appointment. If you plan to take a guided tour or workshop, or use the audio guide, check the relevant dates and availability before your trip.

Other historical features sit side by side in the townscape: St. Nikolai Town Church was built in the 15th century. Schmölln’s market is one of the largest market squares in central Germany. While the museum explores the history of button production, the church and market offer further points of interest for a stay focused on cultural history.

Water Adventure Trail and leisure pool

The Sprotte Water Adventure Trail runs from Posterstein Castle to Schmölln, following the Sprotte River. The route is nine kilometres long in total and features twelve interactive stops and activities, including a mill-themed playground, bridges and fords, the willow village and a Kneipp trail. The path has only gentle inclines and is particularly suitable for families; the stops invite younger visitors especially to play and explore.

The TATAMI leisure pool adds pools and a sauna to these water-based activities. It has 400 square metres of water surface and a 25-metre swimming pool. The facility also includes a Japanese-style sauna area with several themed saunas and a steam room. Schmölln therefore offers different ways to enjoy the water: a nine-kilometre trail with its stops, and the pools and sauna areas at the leisure pool.

Cycling tours and views

The length and character of the tours are important factors when choosing a route. A cycling tour around Schmölln, particularly recommended for families, starts in the town centre and covers about 35 kilometres. Schmölln is also a stop on the roughly 65-kilometre cycling tour through the Altenburger Obstland. The Thuringian Cities Route also passes through Schmölln. As routes and signposting can change, it is worth checking the latest information before setting out.

The Ernst-Agnes Tower offers a different view of the surrounding area: this iron observation tower is 30 metres high and stands on the highest point of Pfefferberg, above Schmölln. Its location and height set it apart from the cycling routes, where distances and route layouts shape your plans. Depending on your interests, you can make an observation point, a shorter family cycling tour or one of the longer routes the focus of your visit.

History in the districts

Schmölln’s districts also have their own cultural and historical attractions. The post mill in the district of Lumpzig was built in 1732. It is the last surviving post mill in the Altenburger Land and one of the two oldest post mills in Thuringia. The mill also hosts several events throughout the year, including the Lumpzig Post Mill Festival.

In the district of Altkirchen, the village museum has five exhibition rooms, with more than 2,000 exhibits across about 300 square metres of exhibition space. Together with the Button and Regional Museum in the town centre, it offers two different ways to explore local history: the village museum’s extensive collection, and Schmölln’s button industry, its materials, tools and machinery. Which stops you include in your stay can therefore depend on whether you are more interested in industrial history, village history, activities on the water or cycling tours.
