Vollmershain combines a valley landscape with three hiking routes, a miniature golf course and historic village architecture. This gives you a choice of different themes when planning your trip: time outdoors, local buildings and artistic depictions of village life. The wider Altenburger Land destination adds other distinct nature, trails and cultural themes.

Valley, trails and recreation in Vollmershain

Vollmershain lies in a valley through which the Mannichswalder Sprotte flows. Meadows stretch along both sides of the river. Wooded slate cliffs alternate with gentle valley slopes, bringing wooded and open landscapes together.

Three hiking routes pass through Vollmershain, including the Bauerngartenroute. The routes are signposted at intersections. If you plan to hike one, check its current condition before setting out, as conditions can change. Another activity in the village is the 18-hole miniature golf course, with holes of varying difficulty. Check whether it is currently open before making plans.

Four-sided farmsteads, the church and village scenes

Of the 25 four-sided farmsteads that once stood in Vollmershain, 15 are almost completely preserved. A four-sided farmstead has buildings arranged around a courtyard on all four sides. The church also has distinctive architectural features: its tower has a Romanesque base with an apse added on the east side, while the nave is late Gothic. Comparing the tower and nave reveals two distinct architectural styles in a single building.

The village’s character is also reflected in paintings: the painter Anton Hahn and his family created, among other works, paintings of buildings in Vollmershain. Together with the farmsteads and church, these offer a view of the village’s history from both architectural and artistic perspectives.

Nature and trails in Altenburger Land

If you would like to explore the wider region as well as Vollmershain, the broader Altenburger Land destination offers a more expansive landscape. Gentle hills, extensive forests and idyllic lakes for swimming characterise the region. This differs in scale from Vollmershain’s valley, meadows and slate cliffs.

The trails in Altenburger Land also offer a range of activities: the modern Neuseen-Challenge long-distance hiking trail runs through the region and is marked with a bright neon-yellow shoe. The Pleiße Cycle Route also passes through Altenburger Land, and the Luther Trail can be walked as a pilgrimage route. Since 2014, the Brüderkirche in Altenburg has served as a pilgrimage and information centre for the Luther Trail and the historic imperial road Via Imperii.

Cultural attractions with different focuses

Regional cultural landmarks include the Rote Spitzen: the surviving Romanesque towers of a former Augustinian canons’ monastery, recognised as a cultural monument of national importance. Altenburg Residential Palace stands on a porphyry rock and houses the Palace and Playing Cards Museum. The Playing Cards Museum is one of the oldest and most extensive museums of its kind in Europe.

Other collections focus on different subjects. The Lindenau Museum owns 180 precious panels of early Italian painting from the 13th to the 16th century. The Mauritianum Natural History Museum displays a historic bird collection, fossils from lignite open-cast mines and an interactive area devoted to local flora and fauna. The Posterstein Castle Museum focuses its exhibitions on the region’s cultural history. A visit to the museum includes the castle dungeon and climbing the 25-metre-high keep; check current availability before travelling.

A heritage railway and a culinary city walk are also among the experiences described for the region: the 900 mm narrow-gauge Coal Railway runs for 15 kilometres from the outskirts of Meuselwitz through the Schnaudertal valley. Altenburg’s Schmecktouren combine a city tour with regional food and stories about the people and traditions of the region. Check current dates and booking requirements before making plans.
