Steinthaleben: Castle Ruins, Trails and Kyffhäuser Monument
Accommodation in Steinthaleben
Steinthaleben can be explored through its sights, the route of the Kyffhäuser Trail and the surrounding landscape. The places and trails offer different perspectives on the history of the Kyffhäuser region, from medieval castle remains to the 19th-century monument.
Castle Ruins and Kyffhäuser Monument
The site of the attraction in Steinthaleben includes the ruins of the 12th-century Reichsburg Kyffhausen castle complex and the Kyffhäuser Monument, which was built in the 19th century. The two structures represent different periods at a shared attraction site: the castle remains date back to the Middle Ages, while the monument belongs to a later period of construction.
The Romanesque ruins of Rothenburg Castle are also in the immediate vicinity of Steinthaleben. From there, the view stretches across the Golden Aue to the edge of the Harz Mountains. Historic buildings and expansive landscape views come together in the surrounding area.
Hiking Trails and Nature Experiences
The Kyffhäuser Trail leads from Barbarossa Cave to Steinthaleben. The cave is an anhydrite cave between the districts of Rottleben and Steinthaleben. The trail also passes the inaccessible Rothenburg Castle ruins. Before planning a visit, check whether this access restriction is still in effect.
Another trail in the surrounding area is the four-kilometre Forest Adventure Trail between the Rothenburg Castle ruins and the Kyffhäuser Monument. Its ten stations are all about experiencing, enjoying and understanding nature; visitors can play a melody on the forest xylophone. The trail is accessible at all times. Nevertheless, check the current conditions before your visit.
The difference between the trails is clear: the Forest Adventure Trail is defined by its four-kilometre length and ten stations, while the Kyffhäuser Trail leads from the cave to Steinthaleben and passes the Rothenburg Castle ruins. This lets you compare the routes by the features noted for each: length and stations on the one hand, route and attraction on the other.
Nature and Culture in the Kyffhäuser Region
In the wider Kyffhäuser region, visitors can explore the Kyffhäuser on an extensive network of hiking trails or take part in nature tours led by trained nature guides. These are two different ways to experience the landscape: on hiking trails or as part of a nature tour.
Filsberg is also one of the landscape features of the Kyffhäuser region. Rising in the east of the Hainleite, the mountain stands 136 metres above the valley floor. Rare limestone flora also grows on Filsberg. Its height above the valley floor and its plant life describe the mountain from two different perspectives.
The village church of St. Pancras stands in Bendeleben. It was rebuilt in 1588 under the patronage of Hermann von Bendeleben. The weathered masonry of the south entrance portal dates back at least to the 12th century, in the Old Romanesque style. The 1588 construction date and the portal’s earlier dating are two distinct historical dates.
Also in Bendeleben, a 21-hectare palace park surrounds the old palace. It was laid out in the English style with Baroque elements. The spring area and tree cover were used to create winding paths and sightlines. The church and park thus offer different insights into the architectural and landscape history of the Kyffhäuser region.
