If you are considering Harzungen as a travel destination, you can focus on two different themes: the village’s history and the adjoining “Rüdigsdorfer Schweiz” nature reserve. It encompasses a gypsum karst landscape and is a hiking area. This means you can consider local history and nature as two separate themes when planning your trip. The hiking area lies within the adjoining protected area; Harzungen’s historical associations relate to the village itself.

The History of Harzungen

In 1259, Harzungen was part of the lands belonging to Count Heinrich of Hohnstein. In the 13th century, the Knights of Harzungen were based at a manor in the village. The two details emphasize different aspects: one mentions Harzungen in connection with the count’s lands, while the other places the knights’ seat directly in the village. Together, they provide a timeframe and a location for the history of Harzungen.

A planned event is also part of the village’s recent history: a village and fire brigade festival in Harzungen was announced for July 4, 2026. The Harzungen Volunteer Fire Brigade was to celebrate its 200th anniversary there. That date has now passed; the announcement referred to a planned festival, not to what actually took place.

Hiking Area and Activities

The “Rüdigsdorfer Schweiz” nature reserve borders Harzungen. Its gypsum karst landscape is a hiking area. If you are interested in the landscape, you can consider this natural area as a separate focus alongside the village’s history. The protected landscape and the village are two distinct geographical points of reference.

Harzungen was also part of the stamp hunt featured in the 2025 edition of the “Harztor Wanderkinder” booklets: stamps could be collected in the named districts. The 2025 Südharz Rallye offers another link to a specific event. It included a 10-kilometer orienteering drive from Harzungen to Osterode and back to Harzungen on a circular route; an additional loop went around Hasenwinkel. The 10 kilometers describe this rally drive, not a hiking route. The stamp hunt and the rally therefore represent different activities, each tied to a particular year.

Harzungen in the Wider Destination of Harztor

The wider destination of Harztor also offers other nature and culture themes. The Bere Valley is a nature reserve with numerous rock formations and wooded areas, and it extends as far as Netzkater. In Neustadt/Harz, numerous half-timbered houses and St. George’s Church shape the townscape. Well-signposted cycling and hiking trails, as well as health trails, run around Neustadt/Harz.

In Ilfeld, the local history museum offers another cultural point of interest within Harztor. Its exhibition areas include displays on industry and crafts, as well as on schools. It also features a small-scale model of the Harz Narrow Gauge Railways and a museum gallery with an exhibition on the geology and mineralogy of the local area. These regional examples broaden the picture of Harztor; they are specifically located in Netzkater, Neustadt/Harz, and Ilfeld.

The other themes in Harztor offer additional regional context without treating the different places as if they were the same.
