Neustadt/Harz offers several distinct things to see and do: the ruins of Hohnstein Castle above the town, St. George’s Church as a historic site, the Neustadt Roland statue, a health terrain trail by the Gondola Pond and the South Harz Nature Park Information Centre. Depending on whether you are interested in history, a walk or nature, different destinations will take centre stage. The individual attractions give you specific points of reference for planning your stay.

Castle, Church and Roland Statue

The nearly 900-year-old ruins of Hohnstein Castle rise above Neustadt on a porphyry hill. St. George’s Church in Neustadt is also designated as a historic site, while the Neustadt Roland is a monument. These represent different aspects of the town’s history: a castle in ruins, a church with the status of a historic site and a monument. If you include cultural history in your travel plans, these distinctions can help you choose destinations to suit your interests.

Health Terrain Trail by the Gondola Pond

Certified health terrain trail 1 (“The Easy One”) runs through the spa park and circles the Neustadt Gondola Pond. It is just under two kilometres long and, according to its description, is suitable for a leisurely walk. The route is described as mostly flat, placing a gentle demand on the cardiovascular system and making it suitable for almost any fitness level. You can consider the length, terrain and stated level of exertion together when choosing a walk for your stay.

Benches along the trail invite you to pause and enjoy “forest bathing.” The surface is firm; according to the trail description, the route is safe to walk even in changeable weather. The description thus covers both the character of the walk and specific features of the trail. The distance of just under two kilometres gives you a clear idea of its length, while the benches mentioned also provide places to rest along the route.

Nature at the Information Centre

The South Harz Nature Park Information Centre is located in the “Haus des Gastes” in Neustadt. Its “Harz Erfrischend” exhibition invites children and adults to take part in interactive activities. It uses a playful approach to explore geology, including gypsum and karst, as well as the region’s flora and fauna. Its focus therefore differs from the historic sites and the walk by the Gondola Pond: the Information Centre centres on nature topics and an interactive exhibition. If you plan a visit, check the latest opening information in advance.

More to discover in the wider destination of Harztor

In the wider destination of Harztor, the Bere Valley is a nature reserve with numerous rock formations and wooded areas; it extends as far as the village of Netzkater. Well-marked cycling and hiking trails, as well as health terrain trails, run through Harztor around Neustadt/Harz. These regional trails and landscapes complement the specific attractions in Neustadt with more ways to explore Harztor as a destination.

The local history museum in Ilfeld is also part of the wider Harztor area. It has dedicated exhibition sections featuring exhibits on industry and crafts, as well as on schools. A model layout of the Harz Narrow Gauge Railways is also on display. The museum gallery features an exhibition on the geology and mineralogy of the local area. The focus in Ilfeld is therefore different from that of the Nature Park Information Centre in Neustadt: industry, crafts and schools complement the geological topics featured there.

The Ilfeld outdoor pool is another of the places described in the wider destination of Harztor. It is set between mountains and forest and has been in operation since 1927.
