Leutenberg: Discover Hiking, the Old Town and Nature

Several hiking trails, the market square ensemble in the historic town centre, the local history museum and the Nature Park House offer different themes to explore during a stay in Leutenberg. To plan your visit, you can first compare the length and routes of the trails, then decide which cultural or nature-related topics interest you most.

Hiking trails by length and route

Four circular hiking trails start and end at Leutenberg’s market square. Circular Trail 2 is 12.0 km long, Circular Trail 3 measures 14.5 km, Circular Trail 4 covers 13.3 km and Circular Trail 6 covers 15.1 km. This makes number 2 the shortest and number 6 the longest of these four trails. Their shared starting point at the market square sets them apart from Circular Trail 5: its 16.3 km route connects Leutenberg, Herschdorf, Landsendorf and Dorfilm.

The Sormitz Trail follows a different route. It runs from Lichtentanne railway station through the Sormitz Valley and past the Nature Park House to Leutenberg’s market square, then continues to Hockeroda; the route is 13.1 km long. If you choose a route based on its starting and finishing points, you can distinguish these details from those of the circular trails that start and end at the market square.

The Thuringian Primeval Forest Trail in Leutenberg is just under 7 km long. There are rest areas and viewpoints along the way. Bear the restrictions in mind when planning: the trail is not accessible and is not suitable for cycling. Numerous viewpoints in Leutenberg also offer views of the lovingly preserved old town and its surroundings.

The children’s hiking trail “On the Salamander’s Trail” has its own focus: it is a circular trail and educational path with many play and learning stations. There is also an extensive network of hiking trails in and around Leutenberg. The tourist information office at the market square provides visitors with hiking maps, suggested routes and extensive information materials. Check current opening hours before visiting.

Market Square, Museum and Local History

Leutenberg’s historic town centre is home to an ensemble of buildings around the market square. The local history museum is just a few metres from the square, at the end of a side street. Its first section is dedicated to the history of the local area, the town and Friedensburg Castle, as well as the Counts of Schwarzburg-Leutenberg and the descendants of the Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt princes. The museum also preserves an original cobbler’s workshop. The town and regional history on display is thus complemented by a tangible insight into a traditional craft.

The present-day Church of St Mary Magdalene is part of the town’s architectural history: it was built in the Neoclassical style from 1812 to 1815. The Way of St James also passes through Leutenberg, between the Lemnitz Valley and Rosenthal. These sites complement the hiking trails with a historical and spiritual perspective on the town.

Nature Park House and Other Activities

Visitors to the Nature Park House in Leutenberg can see live fire salamanders; the building also has a mineral collection. Nature observation and minerals are presented here as separate themes.
