Vachdorf: Half-timbered houses, Hutturm Tower and hiking trails
Accommodation in Vachdorf
Vachdorf can be explored from several perspectives: farms and half-timbered houses shape the village’s appearance, Hutturm Tower tells the story of the fortified church, and the circular hiking trail “Der Krayen” starts at Krayenberg Hill. Local festivals and the Werratal Cycle Path, which runs through Vachdorf, round out the picture. If you are looking for a hotel, you can use these themes as a starting point for planning your trip and consider whether local history, hiking or cycling should take centre stage.
Village setting, Hutturm Tower and festivals
Many farms and half-timbered houses shape the village of Vachdorf. Hutturm Tower is a distinctive testament to local history: it is the last of what were probably four inner corner towers of the fortified church. After it burned down in 1918, it stood without a roof for 88 years and was rebuilt in 2006. Today, it is 18.70 metres tall. Its history combines a specific reconstruction with the older fortified church ensemble.
Vachdorf’s annual cultural calendar includes the carnival season, with its Büttenabend carnival show, and the sports festival, as well as the Kraynfest and Johannisfest. The traditional costume fair lasts three days and takes place in late autumn. These events offer a range of festival traditions and a seasonal occasion to help you plan. If you are planning your trip around an event, check the specific date in advance.
Hiking at Krayenberg Hill
The 3.2-kilometre circular hiking trail “Der Krayen” starts at the foot of Krayenberg Hill, Vachdorf’s local hill. From the highest point, on a clear day you can see the mountains of the Thuringian Forest and the hills of the Thuringian Rhön. Visibility is key: the panoramic views depend on clear conditions.
Along the circular trail are cellars carved into the rock, built by Vachdorf farmers in the 19th century for storing provisions. They were intended to protect the harvest from flooding of the Werra. Krayenberg Hill is also home to a dry grassland slope, maintained by the local heritage association. It is part of the Upper Werra Valley Cultural and Landscape Park. This local area of interest brings together a hiking trail, historic food storage and landscape conservation.
Another route-related point of interest is the former railway station, where information boards explain the planetary system. They were created by students from Obermaßfeld as part of a project. The station is at the starting point of circular hiking trail No. 1. This landmark should not be confused with “Der Krayen,” which starts at the foot of Krayenberg Hill.
Plan cycle routes and your journey
The hiking trails can also be distinguished by their routes: “Der Krayen” is a 3.2-kilometre circular trail starting at Krayenberg Hill; the Vachdorf–Wachenbrunn hike starts in Vachdorf on a section of the first stage of the Celtic Experience Trail. These descriptions refer to different routes and starting points.
For cycling, the Werratal Cycle Path passes through Vachdorf on its stage between Hildburghausen and Meiningen. If you plan to ride this route, check for current notices about possible restrictions before setting off. Vachdorf can be reached via the B 89 or by the Werra Railway between Meiningen and Eisfeld. If travelling by train, check the latest connections and operating times.
