In Oppershausen, local history and a specific circular hiking trail can be considered as two separate topics. Richard von Sebecke had a moated castle built in Oppershausen in 1395. Since 2023, the town has been part of the Wartburg-Hainich World Heritage Region. The two years mark different aspects of travel planning: 1395 refers to the construction history of the moated castle, while 2023 marks the town’s regional affiliation.

Experiences in the Wider Unstrut-Hainich Destination

The treetop path runs 24 meters above the Hainich canopy; from the treehouse, you can see across Hainich National Park. Those who are comfortable with heights can climb the tree tower to a platform 40 meters high. From there, the view stretches across the Hainich to the Thuringian Basin. The heights distinguish the path at 24 meters from the platform at 40 meters.

The treetop path starts 200 meters from the Thiemsburg National Park Centre. There is a large hiking car park, a catering facility, toilets, and a public transport bus stop at the National Park Centre. Check the availability of these facilities before your trip. The National Park Centre presents its exhibition using films, large-format image panels, interactive stations, and hands-on elements. It also offers a fully accessible media guide; tablets and headphones are available to borrow.

The Rose Garden in Bad Langensalza features almost 450 rose species and varieties on a former factory site covering 18,000 m². You can also see rare cacti and yuccas from South America in the Bad Langensalza Botanical Garden. The Thuringian Pharmacy Museum in Haus Rosenthal is dedicated to the history of pharmacy from the 18th to the 20th century across an area of 276 m².

In Mühlhausen, 2.2 kilometers of the innermost and oldest city wall have survived to this day. The town also has 11 medieval churches and a surviving inner city wall ring with numerous defensive towers. The length of the wall and the number of churches provide two concrete measures of Mühlhausen’s historical heritage.

The Betteleichenweg trail in the national park passes cultural and historical highlights such as Ihlefelder Kreuz, Eiserne Hand, and Ihlefeld. In spring, it runs through blooming stands of wild garlic and corydalis. The small museum at Opfermoor Vogtei displays original finds from archaeological excavations of the settlement and cult site. The Rope-Making Museum preserves a landmark of the traditional rope-making craft in Schlotheim in a faithfully reconstructed spinning workshop.
