Discover Grantham: Culture, Parks and Trails
Accommodation in Grantham
Grantham offers a range of highlights for your stay: medieval architecture, markets, parks and trails along the Grantham Canal. If you’re looking for a hotel in Grantham, first consider which of these interests you most. The differences below can help you include cultural attractions, events and tours in your plans.
Church and historic architecture
St Wulfram’s is one of the country’s largest medieval churches and can accommodate around 700 people. During a visit, you can see the Chained Library and descend to the Crypt Chapel. The Francis Trigge Chained Library was established in 1598 and contains 356 individual items. It is open to visitors from April to the end of September, on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 am to 12 pm. If you’d like to visit the library, plan your visit during these seasonal opening times.
The Angel and Royal Hotel is also of interest for the architectural history of Grantham: the two-storey stone building dates from the late 14th century and is one of the few surviving medieval inns in England. Alongside the church architecture, it offers another example of historic architecture in Grantham.
Markets and local produce
The Grantham Craft Market takes place on the first Saturday of every month. Local residents sell handmade gifts and household goods there. The Grantham Farmers’ Market follows on the second Saturday, offering fresh meat, cheese and drinks from local farms. The markets differ both in timing and in what they offer: one focuses on handmade goods, the other on produce from local farms. Dates may change, and vendors at the Farmers’ Market may also vary. Check market dates before your trip.
Parks and events
Wyndham Park has family-friendly play areas, an outdoor gym, a sensory garden, an outdoor splash pool and a visitor centre. The Witham/Slea Blue Green Corridor project in the park runs alongside the River Witham and improves wetland habitats. This means the park combines recreational facilities with a nature-focused aspect.
The Dysart Park Family Fun Day and Dog Show are held annually in July at Dysart Park. If you’d like to include either event in your travel plans, check the event dates in advance.
Grantham Canal and cycling routes
The Grantham Canal is about a mile from Grantham railway station. National Route 15 is open along the canal between Grantham and Muston and is completely traffic-free. Route conditions may change, so check the section before setting out.
A longer option is the 23.5-mile circular cycling route: it starts at Grantham railway station, follows the canal towpath for part of the way and returns to the station. Its circular format and stated distance provide a specific point of reference to distinguish this tour from a visit to the canal.
Town history, museum and culture
A town trail through Grantham is available, as are guided walks offering insights into the past and local history. The Guildhall Arts Centre offers theatre, cinema, comedy and dance, as well as workshops and community activities. Grantham Museum shares stories from Grantham and the surrounding area through physical and digital exhibitions and experiences. Exhibition topics may change. The offerings differ in format: you might be interested in a route through the town, a guided historical walk, an events programme or museum exhibitions.
