Saltfleet is a coastal destination with an unspoilt stretch of coastline and several nature trails. The marshland, dunes and history of the place also offer concrete points of reference for planning your trip.

Coast and Dune Landscape

Saltfleet Nature Reserve is a stretch of unspoilt coast extending from Saltfleet Haven in the south to Howdens Pullover in the north. Saltfleetby-Theddlethorpe Dunes National Nature Reserve covers an 8 km stretch of coastline with foreshore, salt marshes, sand dunes and grassland. It lies between the village of Saltfleet to the north and the coastal town of Mablethorpe to the south. These named endpoints and landscape features give you a concrete framework for placing the coast in context as you plan your trip.

Trails and Birdwatching

There are various trails in the Saltfleetby-Theddlethorpe Dunes, including an accessible circular trail with information boards through Rimac. Trail conditions can change, so check the latest conditions before your visit.

The Saltfleet Walks offer different experiences. Saltfleet Walk One passes through grazing marshland and offers the opportunity to visit the remote Church of St Botolph. Saltfleet Walk Two follows the coast through the Saltfleetby-Theddlethorpe Dunes and returns via the King Charles III England Coast Path. When choosing between the routes described, the first focuses on marshland and the possible church stop, while the second focuses on the coast and dunes.

Over the years, many rare birds and days with heavy bird migration have been recorded at Saltfleetby-Theddlethorpe Dunes National Nature Reserve. Sightings and the intensity of bird migration vary with the season and weather. If you are interested in birds, take these variations into account when planning your visit.

History and Practical Information

The nearby Church of St Botolph is a redundant parish church with fabric dating from the early 13th century and from the 14th and 15th centuries. Saltfleet was probably one of the largest ports outside London from the 12th to the 15th century. The church’s architectural history and the town’s historic role as a port add two further dimensions to its natural attractions.

The listed beach access points are Sea Lane in Saltfleet (LN11 7RP) and Saltfleet Haven (LN11 7SF). The car park at Saltfleet Haven has spaces for 15 cars; its capacity may change. Check the access information and parking capacity again before travelling.

If you are looking for a hotel in Saltfleet, you can start by deciding what kind of stay you want: would you like to focus mainly on the coastal landscape, trails through dunes and marshes, or historical points of interest? This question can help guide your trip planning.
